  1. Right now, the mono version of this classic on the Universal Platinum SHM-CD. Sounds stupendous. Probably the best I've heard this in Redbook form.
  2. I didn't realize that Herbie Hancock will be acting in the new "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" movie. Interesting! I noticed him appear in a trailer and looked up this old news article: http://deadline.com/2015/12/valerian-luc-besson-herbie-hancock-1201665802/
  3. A really great sounding collection of reimagined Miles material.
  4. Thousand Finger Man is spinning. Wow. What a different album than "Beautiful." Same band really, same arranger, same engineer and studio. Different producer, and that producer makes a difference. Lots more reverb to this album than I would have thought. This one is so pop jazz, sort of Hollywood in spots, sort of Motown in others. Horns are bunched together more in arrangement. Duke Pearson is the producer. "Beautiful" is a bit more funky, cheesy in a different way. Sounds less frantic and sweeter. This time the arranger Joe Cain is the producer. With Duke Pearson as the producer of "Thousand Finger Man" I would have thought the opposite!
  5. On to record 2 as I cook dinner. Thinking about Basie on Roulette. . . . A real peak for this band. The music is often so jubilant and grateful sounding. A great salve for the blues or the negativity we sometimes have to slog through and be tired out by.No Pres. . . love Pres with Basie. . .but Davis and Foster et al are filling the void well. Sonny Payne really drives this band and Basie himself often seems inspired in ways he wasn't before or since. Luckily Warner Japan has reissued the albums on cd in great sound. Nothing extra, but each of those albums are well-sequenced works of art. And the sound! So full and swinging!
  6. These Roulette LPs sound fantastic. (I also have the Warner Japan cd version which also sounds fantastic). A really well-chosen overview of the Roulette material.
  7. "Nana" by Delacorte (re-reading).
  8. Love this album. It's a reissue of the Swingsville "Swinging with Pee Wee" and this one is stereo, real stereo. Sounds great! Pee Wee Russell, clarinet, with Bass – Wendell Marshall Drums – Osie Johnson Piano – Tommy Flanagan Trumpet – Buck Clayton
  9. Beautiful music. Kelan Phil Cohran and Legacy: African Skies Bass Clarinet, Flute, Guitar, Vocals – Aquilla Sadalla Congas, Flute, Harp, Guitar, Kalimba , Ukulele , Trumpet – Kelan Phil Cohran Piccolo String Bass, Double Bass, Flute – Oscar Brown III Double Bass, Guitar, Flute – Malik Cohran Harp, Flute, Trombone – Josefe Marie Verna
  10. The Japanese RVG edition. This is such a good recording by Van Gelder. And everyone is ON.
  11. The Verve Elite was a very good series, I agree. I really like almost ever issue and have them all (bought as released). Other series that stood out for me were Jazz in Paris (I learned so much from that series), the Savoy series from Denon (man, that was an exciting series of reissues, I had my friend who was the Tower jazz buyer seek out and order every batch) and the series of reissues from Blue Note of the "pre-bop" material (I love that material and would love to see it reissued again in state of the art sound).
  12. Disc 2, cd version Great playing. Really good sound. I guess I will never have enough Bill Evans, I'm already looking forward to the release coming up in May by the same trio.
  13. I probably will!
  14. Don't think I've ever heard Thousand Finger Man. Is that a good enough reason? I'll fix that, just ordered a copy.
  15. Cool. Now The SHM-CD. Morgan, Mobley, McLean, Walton, Chambers, Higgins.
  16. Larry, if you're looking for a recent reissue of the Charles/Pettiford "3 For Duke" date Japanese Warner released one recently that sounds fantastic:

  17. This one again. I forgot what a monster session AND recording this is. The International Phonography reissue is a system showpiece CD. . . as all their reissues are it's exquisitely produced ad packaged. Larry, there's a recent Warner Japan cd reissue of this that sounds fantastic in my opinion. . . . http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-29085
  18. This lp is a little noisy but not too bad. Love the music. They're not flatting their fifths, they're drinking them.
  19. Spinning some LPs today. I'm running my phono preamp directly into my amp again (my amp has input gain controlled by a stepped attenuator) . . . I think I prefer the sound this way.
  20. I've heard the music in the film. It's okay. . . not KILLER. . . for me. We're all different.
  21. I like Barbarella a lot as well. . . but it's because of Jane at the height of her loveliness. And that's about it.
  22. I was able to take advantage of a rare "I'm willing to listen to some of your music" mood of Lucy's and chose carefully. Snuck in a listen to these three: I tried this, but it was "too busy."
