  1. It's really hard to tell WHAT one that one is, it's probably the latest but very hard to tell. . . . similar release date but not exactly the same. The one I know definitely is the one I'm talking about is this one from cdjapan, probably cheaper from them: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TYCJ-81071
  2. As much of "Power to Love" and "Message of Love" as I could get in.
  3. Yes. That "stretching beyond" may not be the case in Japan, as even they haven't brought out many.
  4. Ok, I'd be interested in hearing what the appeal is for you, you know, compare notes. To me, the issue preventing my fuller enjoyment is what I hear as a tentativeness/lack of a real center like there is on Odyssey, which I hear as highly focused, almost laser-like so. Moto almost strikes me as a rehearsal or a loose jam. Maybe that's what you like, the openness? Different strokes, and all that. . OTOH, I took off "Montezuma" and played it on gigs for about a year. Seriously, I'd like to know what grabs you about this one, because I've been coming back to it for 30+ years thinking there's something there that I've missed. If you can lead me closer to finding it, I'd appreciate it. Again, seriously. Lon, you too. I know you guys don't react to music casually or carelessly. Well, I think the looseness is a draw, sometimes Shorter all tight and chiseled is not an enjoyable listen for me. Looseness and this personnel. . . somehow that allows me to have a slightly different experience with the recording each time.
  5. The recent cd of Odyssey sounds really good imo. Give it a shot.
  6. I believe that the new Blu-Spec 2 cd from Japan, which isn't that expensive, has the corrected version (believe I read that elsewhere). The Complete Columbia Album set is at least not that expensive and if one didn't have a few of the other albums a good deal. Can't share your wish for downloads personally, I'm not a computer audio fan, but yes it would be nice to have it out and easily accessible.
  7. I agree with Steve that the dates with Chambers have a special character. G.A. in your shoes I'd grab Et Cetera first; the most recent Japanese version is the best sounding version I've heard.
  8. I don't prefer it to Iska. I do like them both, and the recent Japanese issues sound great. I don't have Native Dancer on Blu-Spec 2; I have it in the Complete Album Collection, it is correct now there.
  9. I echo Mingus and would love to see a Monk pic. Perhaps based on "Crepescule w/Nellie"? And a movie about Duke starring Lawrence Fishburne.
  10. Demon Dance was just reissued in Japan and is well worth seeking out.
  11. I know that the Caliman is a good one.
  12. I'll agree that the Blue Note Works cd sounds like a needle-drop. I'd be interested in the opinions of others on this 75th Anniversary edition. Sounds like it is tape sourced to me, regardless I think it sounds great.
  13. Previous US one was a needle-drop I believe, they didn't seem to have tapes at the time.
  14. This new version of Sweet Honey Bee sounds wonderful. Doesn't sound like an lp transfer if it is.
  15. Absolutely not, though I know that there's reasons that others love the Sun Ra that I don't. There's room for all of us on the Ark.
  16. I have well over 100 Sun Ra albums, and Atlantis is one of my very least favorite. Me too.
  17. Ligeti, glad you are posting here, you're contributing plenty.
  18. Welcome aboard HutchFan! The conductor will be along soon to punch your ticket.
  19. Laurie, my condolences. I agree with all that John Felser says. I'm sure you can receive help here on the board or through PM to anyone on this thread about which sets would be best to go the ebay route, etc. And I know board members here would be interested in the opportunity to purchase some of this collection. Best of luck! Let us know if we can help.
  20. I think that trio was doing amazing work.
  21. Yes. . I think the most important part of any sonic reporting is "on my system." I listen regularly to four systems (two in my house, one at my parents', and one at my girlfriend's) and different vintage cds and masterings sound preferable in different systems. And my main system is very flexible so I can tailor bloated bass, make the best of dynamics that are there, etc. I've found that new masterings often sound less listenable on 'nineties players than more recent players, and vice versa sometimes. And I often used to prefer one on headphones and another on speakers. There's little absolute so if something sounds good to you, it is good, and there may be no reason to move to another.
  22. I have heard the Monk. To be honest the new SHM-CDs from Japan sound a bit better: warmer, fuller. They seem the same transfers from the master recordings, but a different remastering, and I prefer the Japanese by a bit. But this new US release sounds better to me than the previous US editions. (Though I still like the RVG editions quite a bit).
  23. Evans is one of those artists I can enjoy the work of from any period, and from whom I'm always discovering new nuances and strong performances.
