But doesn't Moran fancy himself something of an avant musicians? - Rivers, Braxton, Taylor, Threadgill, Oliver Lake, et al? He certainly seems to like getting into their performances. Sorry you don't enjoy these types of performances, but I can understand that, since sitting through straight-ahead stuff depresses me. To each his own, and no argument there. As for the Board, I more than suspect the advantage is towards the mainstream, although I think the tilt has not been as great as formerly. I think he models himself on Jaki Byard, a mostly inside-modestly outside type of musician schooled in the mainstream tradition. I've seen some pretty depressing avant garde jazz performances--almost no audience, the venue a dump, the performance grating and unoriginal. But I have seen everyone you mention live, and would do so again with the opportunity. Good observation. I personally think Moran is as real as a real deal. And I'm liking this album, I've spun it four times now.

I've listened to this a few times. I like it. Not head over heels about it but I liked listening to it and I'll spin it again.

JC Moses . . . such a great drummer. I really like Lloyd of this vintage as leader, with Hamilton, etc. This new one is GOOD.

Lon - which recordings are you talking about? Of Course Of Course has Tony Williams, not Pete LaRoca; and the tracks recorded a little later with LaRoca have Albert Stinson on board rather than Ron Carter. Anyway, this should be great and I am looking forward to it. Should be quite a bit better than most of the live recordings with Jarrett and DeJohnette, at least in terms of Lloyd's playing. I don't know quite what I was thinking when I said that. This is a good release.

"Gotham" . . . interesting. Hasn't quite found its tone yet but we'll see.

That was indeed accurate at the time and to my knowledge (granted, limited) is still correct.

There are many many outstanding piano solos in jazz recorded history, many overshadowed by other great solos within the same tune or session. (I'm talking about a solo within an ensemble performance rather than a piano performance played unaccompanied). Let's share some of our favorites. I'll start off by mentioning Wynton Kelly's solo on "Remember," on the Hank Mobley Blue Note album "Soul Station." Like so many of Kelly's solos it shines with swing, precise control, and just the right amount of a bit of "something unexpected" added. Every time I play this album I wait for that solo and it really satisfies. This solo is a great example of why I spent years buying anything if Wynton Kelly appeared somewhere on the recording. I'm hard-pressed to say what makes this one solo stand out, it's just a personal thing, and I think it has to do with the swing, the groove, and Paul and Art are really contributing here. This one is one of my favorite jazz piano solos.

No one would believe me if I pretended I wasn't going to buy the Dial set as well. . . so I won't pretend!

Actually J I think there's at least one more in Sue's handbag, the Ronnie Scott thing. I hope that comes out one of these days.

According to Hans (J.A.W.) elsewhere it will be 8 cds. He is also reporting a 10 cd "Modern Jazz on Dial" set.

I think I might be Japanese. CD mainly (a bit of vinyl) for me, and I've been buying a lot directly from Japan the last year.

There's never too much but I think we'll be saying "That's a Plenty."

It is a good one, I should start watching it again.

Add the two ECM solo dates and that's about my listening pattern too John, though I like the Origins material and need to get back to it. (Just so little listening time now!)

I agree, "Revenge" is well worth picking up.
