Steve, not sure on the dates. I personally think it's likely he drank alcohol after stopping heroin use, though he may have been not wanted to drink heavily and may have refrained from doing so.

Yes, MusicMasters, not Music and Arts. It's awesome. I'd look for it used, that's not likely to be a cdr.

I didn't know LaserLight had that Chicago concert out, this was in the States on Music and Arts and is a great two cd set.

I confess I don't know much about the other Atlantics. I heard a few a few decades ago before I "got" Carmen and wasn't thrilled. I should begin checking them out in the near future. The one I'd most like to hear, the live one with Simmons on piano, "Live at Century Plaza," I think was only on cd from Japan a long time ago and is very expensive now.

I can imagine it. All kinds of things can happen at the pressing stage including phase reversal, EQ changes, etc.

Yes, that Laserlight material is excellent.

Flurin, I believe all the single disc versions of the Carmen Songbook omit many of the vocal introductions. . . which are all great and I wouldn't want to be without them. I could be wrong, I know the US single cd version did omit them. Hear, hear. Except the current Japanese Warner jazz discs are garbage. Wow, don't feel that way at all (I don't have any of the European ones, only the Japanese).

I have picked up Elektra and Vortex titles too. I'm very happy wtih this series, most I've picked up I consider considerable sonic improvements over the earlier cds. They sound very good in my usual players, there are a few that sound a bit harsh when played through my oldest player, but the newest players reproduce them very well.

I look at this particular one this way: I'm a big Waller fan. I've heard quite a few very reverential and conventional tributes. . . some are excellent, most are okay. This one takes a different slant, and I'm eager to hear it. I don't listen to the radio so I don't know how NPR presents things and can't get upset about it. I know that the jazz I really love is a museum thing now, not a living thing that will grow on into the future. A lot of the "now" jazz. . . just doesn't do that much for me. So I don't have a dog in this hunt. . .just looking forward to hearing what Jason Moran and company will do with the Waller material, and allowing myself the room to be pleasantly surprised.

I haven't turned my iPod on in about 18 months. Guess I don't need it.

I prefer piano concertos, though there are a few violin concertos that I have enjoyed. But I'm a neophyte. I may have a different answer in ten years.

I'm not going to stream this as I've had it pre-ordered and will wait to hear the disc. Interesting concept and players.
