  1. J&K “Stone Bone” A&M/CTI LP (RSD release) I like this one the more I play it!
  2. A stuffy morning! Looking forward to the final day of in-laws visiting from Austin. Starting off with. . . Barney Wilen “Zodiac” reissue LP
  3. I’m listening to session takes of “American Beauty” via the Grateful Dead “Angel’s Share” release. The fidelity of the sound is really amazing, especially the vocal tracks, which are generally more recessed than this in releases. However. . . the singing is often cringeworthy. . . .
  4. I love Miles' playing pretty much throughout his leader years. . . its evolution is clear but at every stage it's very enjoyable. I think my favorite solo is from "In a Silent Way". . . .
  5. So nice to finally have an SACD version of this release crucial to my listening world. John Coltrane “Crescent” Japan Universal SHM-SACD Sound is excellent; my now favorite digital version.
  6. Starting off late this morning with “At Barloyd’s” a nine cd set of piano music recorded in a Parisian apartment. This disc is the one by Franck Amsallem.
  7. “The Complete Fingers Remember Mingus” Jazz in Britain 3 cd set, disc 1 400×400 37.5 KB Followed by “The Next Generation Performs Charles Mingus Brand New Compositions” Columbia cd 300×300 8.67 KB I forgot how good this one is! Bass – Ray Drummond Drums – Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Victor Lewis Flute, Tenor Saxophone – Craig Handy Piano – Benny Green, John Hicks Piccolo Flute, Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone – Alex Foster Producer – Delfeayo Marsalis, Sue Mingus Tenor Saxophone – George Adams Trumpet – Jack Walrath Vocals – Charles Mingus, Eric Mingus Written-By – Charles Mingus
  8. “Ellington Jazz Party in Stereo” Columbia CSP stereo LP Well, I picked up a well-priced stereo copy of this album, which I just have in an original pressing in Mono; the stereo LP I have is one of those digitally remastered “CBS Jazz Masterpieces” versions. This one is a 'seventies “Collector’s Series Pressing” releases so not a 'fifties original BUT it sounds really good and is very clean. Sounds better than the Jazz Masterpieces pressing. I LOVE THIS MUSIC!
  9. 480×477 73.2 KB “Blows Against the Empire” RCA/Legacy cd I wish Mobile Fidelity would do an SACD of this. . . none of the cd versions I have heard really match the sound and feel of the OG LP I have, which is pretty noisey I’m afraid. Still remember my fascination with this music in the 'Seventies.
  10. Miles Davis “Someday my Prince will Come” Sony Blu-Spec CD2 mono disc 500×500 37.4 KB
  11. Another disc from the “Enjoying the Ride” Grateful Dead box set. Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA (6/5/69) disc 1
  12. A great player with an identifiable style. I really like his albums for Roulette and Verve as a leader. I reach for the 2 cd set from Verve in the "Elite Edition" series a lot: https://www.discogs.com/release/8703620-Harry-Edison-The-Swinger-and-Mr-Swing
  13. Ted Nash and Odeon “La Espada de la Noche” Palmetto cd A very interesting album with unique instrumentation. Nash has mastered many instruments. Accordion – William Schimmel Baritone Horn, Trombone, Tuba – Clark Gayton Drums – Matt Wilson Tenor Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Flute – Ted Nash Violin – Nathalie Bonin
  14. Arturo O’Farrill “Live in Brooklyn” Zoho cd This is one of my favorites of Arturo’s. Great live recording. Bass – Andy Gonzalez Drums – Dafnis Prieto Piano, Producer – Arturo O’Farrill Producer – Todd Barkan Recorded live at the Up Over Jazz Café, Brooklyn, NY, on August 8 & 9, 2003.
  15. John Coltrane “Crescent” Impulse Japan SHM-SACD This one again to start off a cool, quiet morning. What a great sounding edition of this essential work.
  16. Yes, I skip those Draper sessions entirely.
  17. John Coltrane “Crescent” Impulse Japan SHM-SACDSHM-SACD Finally arrived from cdjapan. Worth the wait.
  18. Bossarenova Trio - Paula Morelenbaum, Joo Kraus, Ralf Schmid “Atlantico” Skip Records cd I think my system will lose a few pounds playing this one back in full. . . . Brilliant IMO.
  19. Milt Jackson “It Don’t Mean A Thing if you Can’t Tap Your Foot to It” Pablo/OJC cd Followed by “Jazz of the World War 2nd–It Don’t Mean A Thing” Duke Ellington, For Discriminate Collectors LP
  20. Miles Davis “In Concert” Sony 20 bit SBM LP facsimile 2 cd set, disc 2 I think this release of “In Concert” sounds wonderful. I am always impressed by Michael Henderson, his bass playing just always floors me. Gave Miles just what he wanted and was the hearbeat of the band.
  21. Opinions differ on that.
  22. Perhaps 'polite' is underrated.
  23. I guess I think more highly of George with Miles than many here. "Seven Steps to Heaven,""My Funny Valentine," "Four + More," and "Miles Davis in Europe" (and previously unreleased material from these) are among my favorite Miles, in part perhaps because they were among my first Non-'lectric Miles, and among my longest listened to.
  24. What a band! Alto Saxophone – Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson Bass – Ray Brown Drums – Lawrence Marable Piano – Art Hillery Producer – Norman Granz Tenor Saxophone – Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis Trumpet – Harry “Sweets” Edison* Vibraphone – Milt Jackson Milt Jackson “Night Mist” Pablo/OJC cd 599×606 118 KB
  25. Had a fun dinner outing with in-laws from NYC and Austin last night. Was up later than usual! It’s hot this morning. Sigh. But I’m toughing it out to listen to some music. Now playing Henry “Red” Allen and his Orchestra “1929-1933” Chronogical Classics cd Mostly Victor recordings. 297×300 13.1 KB
