Rasmussen: 36% of America rarely or never drinks
jazzbo replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm pretty much in the 36%, just not my thing. I'd think that 9%and 36% both exclude a significant number not answering truthfully or being in denial. -
Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box
jazzbo replied to djcavanagh's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mine arrived today. Wasn't packaged as mentioned above, but was in a separate box inside a box, and the outer box was pretty mangled somewhere along the way from Germany, but the box set was well-protected. A very handsome set. Looking forward to hearing a few of these dates I haven't heard, and many that I haven't heard in a while. -

I like the way you think. I would love this set too, and would love to live inside that musical world. That's the way my musical world is blooming, to enwrap all types of music with interest. -

I'm a big fan of the Adderley material as well. . . . Have it but would love a box set. But what I would love and what I get are often different things. -
LOL "Just when I thought I was out. . . they pull me back in."

Hey Rob, good to see you posting. Was thinking of you yesterday when I spun a Jay McShann recording. Let me know what you think of the sound. I'm enjoying the Coltrane and looking forward to the Mies.

Yes, Marantz and Fisher have been "warm" in my experience too. I think these Wilder recordings may seem less "warm" on your system than the Gold CD version. Will be interested to know if my prediction is true.

Agreed, but those are already out (I have all of them but the Persip and Paich so far) and he was listing forthcoming ones.

They're very good, I have them on Toshiba EMI discs.

Oh no! I've bought way too many of these and now there's more?

possible to Kickstarter TW, BN 16-Aug-1968? or Roots?

I'm with this in spirit but. . . I don't think we'll see this unreleased material appear in this manner. Minds that then mattered listened to this and deemed its lack of quality in their eyes dangerous to the legacy of Blue Note records, the criteria then in use. And as Tyrone Washington is not a name to conjure sales with, I really would think the lease price would be high enough that if you were to do the numbers an interested party would realize they'd lose the money. And it slipped out and a number of those nutty enough to seek it out sought it out and a number of those won't buy a release. Don't see it happening myself, personal feelings otherwise none-the-less. -
what are you drinking right now?

My favorite beer. -
I think the hope is that this may be a treatment that the non-jazz masses (which are really massive masses, massive enough for a movie to actually make money) will be intrigued by and want to see. I have doubts, but I think that's the aim, the way to get the picture made. It could be quite interesting. It could be utterly awful. It's a risk, indeed. I admit to being both repulsed and intrigued. It will all depend on the plausibility of the main event in the movie, and I think I'll have to see it to know. So there, see, they even got me, the jazz fanatic to want to see it. I'm going to see if I can scare up any info of what role Frances played in Miles' life at that time. I wouldn't have thought it was major enough for Zoe to be in the move. So again, more to wonder about. Not a bad thing. I like Cheadle as an actor a lot. I want to give him a benefit of the doubt, and I'm willing to for now.

Yes, the Deluxe was RVG (I like it, sue me). This is Reeves.

I agree about the rebuying, I only do it for certain artists and titles, admittedly I'm tempted by more than I should be, and I have money in the bank and stuff happens. I've explored a lot of new music too, but find actually more diminishing returns in that aspect. There really is less and less new music for me to explore that I have a big interest in. Result of decades of collecting I guess and learning what you like and what you don't. e, yes, I did a brief comparison. They're both nice releases. SACD is different than 96/24. To my ears, on my system, there is more "ambiance" on the Blu-ray, and a richer, "slower," more fleshy sound on the Analog Productions. Both are great. The Blu-ray includes the live concert in stunning sound.

My idea is that this is like several other earlier sets (and perhaps a later one, the Shaw) a case where the estate dictated potential lists of the discs. I remember the Cole set saying that the estate's idea of a cd was 60 minutes and Mosaic wasn't to go much beyond that, and as a result that large set might have been a bit smaller.

Any more about the Monk ? I always thought the RVG was above criticism compared to the McMaster largely due to original acetates being used IIRC. Although I ordered the two Monks earlier, I got the Milt Jackson first. It sounds really good. But, in my opinion so does the RVG. At this point I like them both, glad to have both.

Got mine, but haven't listened yet. Looks great!

Anyone else try any of these? I have the Miles Davis (Lift to the Scaffold) on order, and have received A Love Supreme. A Love Supreme has all the material that was on the Deluxe Edition, but remastered by Kevin Reeves. This sounds wonderful to me. My Blu-ray player has a very nice analog output section and sound is generally excellent from this machine. ALS sounds really really good, lots of detail and very spacious. The live material also sounds great. Looking forward to the Miles and may add a few more jazz titles to the collection. . . . Interested to hear any other impressions.

Great news that she's home! -
I think, given what I've read about the box from the label and listeners, that only Kind of Blue is a new mix, the others are the original mono mixes mastered for this edition. Which is best in my opinion. New mono mixes. . . well they might be great, but the draw for me is to have the mono as originally released and experienced at the time. And there are those who don't like Wilder's work or aren't crazy about that but I'm sure you know that. Takes all kinds in this world. That's true e, tonal characteristics of his work have changed over the years. I still like the early masterings from him more on my new system than on previous incarnations though.

"Warm" it seems to me is a product of both the original recording and the mastering (and remastering) as is evident from your survey of those you have, you found the Gold cd version to be "warm" and "rich in detail," and "quiet" in comparison to other versions which I guess are less so regarding these characteristics. I think that more than anything what you will get from this set is going to be a reflection of Mark Wilder's mixing and mastering. If you find his work in general to be "warm" and "analog sounding" then this is likely to carry forward in this set. I would consider the Sony SACD as my favorite digital version, followed by the Wilder remastered "Deluxe" version. I wouldn't call either "warm" but rather "neutral" sounding as far as masting tonal balance goes. I'm looking forward to these mono discs, I've become a fan of Wilder's work. My earlier stereo system seem to present his work with some brittleness and a bit of harshness but in my recent systems the sound is more like Goldilock's porridge to me, "just right."

The one we all know was the US original.

I agree with page. I've lost people I love dearly, and I've become quite demonstrative with those I love. Hope your wife is better minute by minutes. -
Glad to hear it was a great one. Many more happy happy returns!
