I’ve been holding this in reserve for the right time and this morning seems right. Charles Mingus “In Argentina: The Buenos Aires Concerts” Resonance Records 2 cd set, disc 1 I’m a Mingus nut so this was one of the most exciting release of the year for me.

A bit cool and soggy. Going to a “protest” at noon in town, so interesting that this little town is hosting one. Starting off with dsic 2 of Art Pepper “Geneva 1980” Omnivore cd. . . I really like the pianist on this date and other recent live Pepper releases, Milcho Leviev. Sound is okay here–he could be better heard but it’s not terrible.

A nice warm morning. I enjoyed a few minutes staring at our dogwood which is fully in bloom–a brief but beauteous few weeks when this hardy tree blooms. (It has been shortened by wind and snow storms twice in the last two decades!) I’m starting off with a cd that was sent to me inscribed by the artist herself. A wonderful surprise! I really like this disc. Claudia Acuna “Turning Pages” 300×300 14.6 KB

It's a good record. I really like Joe's playing here (and elsewhere).

Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard for RSD 2025
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
I'm holding back listening to this Mingus. . . to just have a thrill in reserve for when I need it (been a hard time for me lately, my dog passed two weeks ago, tomorrow is the third anniversary of my father's passing and I miss him more and more as time goes by, and then there's 102 days of chaos etc.) I'll take the cellophane off soon. I'm a Mingus nut--can't hold back forever. Thanks for the positive impressions. -

Needed some funk this morning. My original 2 LP set of Miles Davis “Live/Evil” bought 51 years ago. Sounding great today!

A cool soggy morning. I woke up hungry–looking forward to breakfast with my wife and one of her sisters and brother-in-law at an okay cafe. Hip Bop Essence All-Stars “Bongo Bop” Hip Bop Essence cd This is a fun date and like all those I’ve heard on the label by the All Stars (varying groups) very well-recorded. The violin is a surprise and those organists all deliver. Alto Saxophone – Jorge Sylvester Arranged By – Milan Simich Bongos – Papo Pepin Clarinet – Bob Franceschini Drums – Idris Muhammad Organ ] – Doug Carn, Joey DeFrancesco, Dr. Lonnie Smith or Rueben Wilson Trombone – Josh Roseman Violin – Michał Urbaniak

Yes, that's quite different than here. These few weeks are the unfolding of the green that will dominate the summer. And summer here can be a bit humid but is beautiful, as is the fall. But the emergence of foilage in the early Spring feels spiritual, mystic, I love this period.

Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
jazzbo replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
I've collected everything I can of Immanuel Wilkins and Joel Ross, as leaders or sideman on and off Blue Note. To me, they are masterful musicians and writers and represent one course the future of jazz can embody. -

I totally enjoy those mono RVG Edition releases. I just wish they would do the 1939 to 1952 or so recordings that have not been remastered this century. -
Wes Montgomery and Milt Jackson “Bags Meets Wes” Keepnews Collection cd

Rather than these I'd like to see the first 15 years or so of the label reissued with the current technology to digital (Redbook, SACD). Not going to happen but what I would prefer to see as a project.
