Hope it was a great one!

I picked up the Hayes. One disc features Cat Anderson sitting in and the second Sal Nistico and Albert Stinson. Jimmy Duecher is on both. There's a short interview with Nistico. Sound is so much better than previous Ronnie Scott recordings released on cd. www.worldsrecords.com has had it available for over a week.

Ahmad Jamal and Carter/Bradford Mosaics can be pre-ordered
jazzbo replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wow. I've been working my way backwards through this set (Not too long ago I listened to to cd versions of this material chronologically forwards, so I wanted to do this one differently) and I have to say the sound quality is superb. Dynamic, full. I have most of this material on both cd and lp, and I am pretty sure this is the release of the material I'll grab to listen to from now on. The music is just so so good. -
I haven't seen a statement from T. S. M. Jr. about the Dragon release. I can think of several other reasons that he decided to release them under his own label, many persons looking for the Dragon unsuccessfully may have been eager to purchase a family release; I was one of those, I assure you. Wouldn't it be ironic if the contract for the Swedish Radio broadcast and recording session actually made the family releases the illegitimate ones? I don't quite see your point on the Miles release but that's okay. I visibly saw all the Miles boots disappear from racks over the course of one year in the nineties. The Dragon didn't go away, and I honestly think that is because it was a legitimate release, or became one. I guess we could agree to say both of our assumptions/educated guess-opinions have a chance of being actually true.

I've read online (truthfully or not I can't say) that the Swedish radio broadcast payments included payment for the rights for possible later recording sales and that the lps and cds are therefore legitimate. As Brownie mentions, the Miles Davis set was new at a time when the Miles Davis estate was busy threatening law suits against all the Miles Davis bootlegs from Moon, JMY, etc. and all these bootlegs disappeared from the racks, but the Dragon remained, sanctioned so to speak, and even appeared in another edition from DIW. The Miles Dragon set is still available, and there were sets from Getz, Gillespie and others. If they weren't legitimate I think some or all of these would not have been released or long been around.

All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I agree that they are richly rewarding and essential, but there are other sets. . . Bird's Savoy and Dial for example. This music is well worth getting, in what ever form. -

All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I bought the Ellington Carnegie Hall Concerts box recently, also from Europe Concord/Universal and it has exactly the same mastering as the original US cds. I would doubt that they went to the effort and cost to remaster these Monk discs, it's my guess that they are exact clones of the previous issues as far as mastering. I'm not buying this, I've had the US box set for over a dozen years and don't need it. The music is well worth having. If you don't have the Blue Note material, I think that's just as important, or perhaps more so, but this is great listening. I think you're expecting to get too much information now about a set that is not even released yet in Europe. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

The Porcupine Tree Mosaic. Some of the alternate cuts are incredible! -
Right, Charles Ellsworth Russell appeared with Monk in '63, the earlier date is a Miles Davis Sextet appearance. I'm very fond of this official release. It came out at one of the lowest points of my life and still cut through my haze and dazzled me.

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
jazzbo replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Well, I did ride up and catch this cool gig. It was a hot ride up, but I was really surprised that due to a bit of a rain front that had passed through the ride home was a good thirteen or fourteen degrees cooler, a welcome surprise. Everyone sounded good. Greg and Jim both gave some very interesting solos, and their contributions to "Creole Love Call" and "Hhumba with a Veiw" really stand out in my memory. It was so good to see Jim again and to meet Greg. I really enjoyed the conversations Jim and I had in between sets, it had been six or seven years I think since we last talked. Also on hand was singer Sandra Kaye whose delivery and voice were sweet indeed. The band swung in a special way when she was on stage, or so it seemed to me. I hope there's more, I know Greg will keep us posted if there are, and if anyone is in the area they should go to the very next one. -
Start with the PORCUPINE TREE BLU-RAY. (Audio is incredible.) Oh and maybe "The Shining." That sucker looks fantastic in the Blu-Ray transfer.

Bertrand: I think it's Oppo you're thinking of. Oppo BDP-83 and BDP-83SE seem to be the ones that people on Hoffman board and audioasylum are excited about. I've no experience with them, and I'm a Sony guy for this sort of thing. Search amazon for these Oppo items, they sell them.

Do it! Blu-Ray is an undeniable upgrade both visually and audibly. I've had one for over two years now, an ES series Sony, and it's just a great source. You can buy brand new Blu-Rays for ten bucks now. Sure makes me happy.

James Joyce I pasted in an excerpt of Henry Miller's writing. Turns out he writes like William Shakespeare!

Re-watching Crash, Season One, on Blu-Ray. Moran Atias and Arlene Tur. . . wow. And Dennis Hopper is brilliant.

I got a shipping notice as well, meaning I'll probably have both sets on Wednesday. Takes a long time to get to the heart of Texas. It's hard to believe that the Jamal set is finally ready and rolling! -
'68 to '71 has over the last few years become my favorite period. Just such great stuff in there.
