I can't remember exactly, but I think RVG worked out a weekly routine by which Prestige, Savoy and Blue Note used different days to record at his studio. If someone has the patience it shouldn't be too difficult to work out a RVG discography for, say, the mid-to-late 50s and see what his weeks were like. A hard job but someone had to do it, I guess F You're right, I read that too, I think it was in the Mosaic catalog brochure interview with RVG from many years ago. I do know that August 4, 1955 was a Wednesday (and RVG recorded Hank Jones "Trio" for Savoy that afternoon/evening). That important date and bit of info should help you figure them all out!

I bought a copy this week as a gift. . . It was #1841 or so. . . . Not that that is absolutely an indicator. But. . . I doubt they sold much more than 2,000.

My thoughts exactly! Well, I really like the "facimile" 16 bit and 20 bit series from Savoy/Denon. Love the fact that these were just like the lps and loved the glossy covers and big back cover and the sound was glorious! Some of my great exciting jazz collecting moments were getting this series out of the bins! Some wodnerful music!

Absolutely. This session deserves to be better known and appreciated.

I think quite a few of the fifties Savoy jazz LPs were done at RVG's. Ozzie Cadena was the guy responsible, I think. He got RVG to do a number of gospel albums I understand. Perhaps Malaco would do an RVG series of the gospel material MG Man, RVG did some beautiful jazz recordings for Savoy in the fifties. And the sound is a little different than BN or Prestige, CTI etc. on some of these dates. (He's recorded as saying that he tailored the sound according to producer needs. I totally love the way the sound is on the Savoy/Denon cds of the Hardin/Coltrane, Duke Jordan, Byrd, Hank Jones, and Fuller sessions (and others). Beautiful!

I'm such a fan of the RVG series(es) I'd buy some!

THANKS for that information and link.

I haven't compared the JSP to the Mosaic, but a friend of mine has, and he says. . . JSP ripped off the Mosaic and they sound the same to him.

I wouldn't be able to do it, but you may be able to. . . replace capacitors, etc. . . .There are those who work on Fishers, but the word on the audio forum streets are that they take a LOOOOOOONG time to get around to the job.

I don't have the Select though I might order it in due course (I have the material in various forms). . . but I totally agree about Cosmos, this is my favorite session of all those in the box.

Time for me to plug some of my favorite people: Decware High Fidelity Engineering. They started out doing speaker repair, the first to offer these services over the internet, and it was a successful venture, and they still do that: http://www.decware.com/newsite/mainmenu.htm Choose "Speaker Repair" from the menu in the left frame. He offers do it yourself kits.

You are correct - the D/A converter is obviously a huge part of the puzzle. Is there a way to bypass the internal D/A converter in an iPod? I honestly don't know. For that matter, I don't even know the specs on the iPod's internal converter - I would expect that they aren't very good. FWIW, I have a friend who has 24bit converters on his computers and he says that he gets excellent sound quality playing lossless files from harddisc (he does production and mastering). There is a way to bypss the DACs in the iPod as Monitor Audio makes an "iDeck" which does just this, and I have seen an expensive "mod"to the iPod that also accomplishes this.

Face it, we're weirdos.

Darn! I didn't get to see that! But I've been in that room in the seventies.

They possibly pressed even fewer lps than of the other sets. . . .

Both those are good. . . . and the Berigan is also excellent (and not going to be around for much longer). (But none of them are really what I would call "swing" except a big chunk of the HRS.)

I bought a clearance guitar from Target for a friend as well, a Washburn "Lyons" strat copy that had a little practice amp in the box as well for about that same price. Was not a bad guitar for a beginner for that price!

Me too! I think the RVG sound great and I listened to it twice yesterday actually. Dex. . .. He was one of a kind!

I have a taped copy of that lp that I have on cdr. . . .I'll definitely buy this cd. But. . . . The other two releases also look intriguing and I can't find info on them.
-
Wow! Can't find any news on these. . . they look great!

Glad LAL mentioned a couple of Hodes. I would not like to be without the Hodes and Ra sides.

My sister lives in Richmond and sent me some information I didn't find anywhere else: "The VT incident is still big in our news. Several pages of the paper the last two days with photos and info on each of the victims. Two were from our area. One had called home after the shooting in her dorm to say she was safe and was talked into going to her next class by the police and then was killed. What a roller coaster for her family, thinking she was safe and then not hearing from her. A friend of mine has a friend with a son on the VT rescue squad (he is only a sophomore) and that will be difficult to get over, too. He said the cell phones were going off in all the backpacks when they went in and they couldn't answer them." I can imagine who anguishing it would be to hear all those cellphones. . . . And that poor family that thought their daughter was safe and then. . . . -
How do you put pictures in your posts

Cary, Yes, Smokestack is my favorite of the Hill Blue Notes (oddly Point of Departure is the one I don't quite "get" and hardly ever play. It's so. . .well. . . I can't describe Smokestack correctly either but it's "grounded" in a way that I find really appealing. And the piano work is just so different and beguiling.
