  1. I'm intrigued by this upcoming Tone Poet release (on January 29) because the cover doesn't say stereo. Could this be mono? On the other hand, the back cover clearly says BST-81569. But I can dream.

And the mining of the vault continues: 1970' includes 74 previously unreleased studio recordings from 1970, most taken from the sessions for the ""New Morning"" and ""Self Portrait"" albums. Also included are the nine songs from the legendary session with George Harrison. Maybe the notes will contain the real story behind the creation of the "Self Portrait" album.
  3. Release date February 15: Release date March 15:
  4. Release date January 15: Charlie Ventura, one of the most popular, fondly-remembered, and singular saxophone voices in this history of jazz, is the star of these two legendary recording sessions that have not been heard in more than five decades. A 1953 broadcast from New York City's Band Box nightclub features Charlie in the format that made him a star: As the centrepiece of the Gene Krupa Jazz Trio-on tenor, baritone, and bass sax-along with pianist Teddy Napoleon, and that ace drummer man himself. These Boris Rose tapes only appeared on a limited edition bootleg LP some 50 years ago. And from 1957, the year that Ventura placed second only to Stan Getz in the Playboy magazine jazz poll, "Adventure with Charlie" highlight's the saxophonist's modern jazz period, with Ventura "discovery" Billy Bean on guitar and other young lions. "Adventure with Charlie," briefly released more than 60 years ago on the King label, was likely the last, pure jazz recording ever released under the name of Charlie Ventura.
  5. Release date January 29: The effects of the bebop revolution in jazz music are still being felt and explored. Of the half dozen true pioneers of the movement, pianist Bud Powell has remained somewhat in the shadows, although his work has become a major touchstone for true devotees of the music and a principal influence for most of jazz's most explorative pianists. // Powell's brilliant original compositions are essential, infinitely listenable but also strangely tricky. Unlike Monk, Parker and Gillespie, the composer neglected to perform them much after their original recordings, so they never became a part of the jazz lingua franca. Pianist and historian Ethan Iverson provides a fantastic validation of Powell's compositional genius on his new recording, Bud Powell In The 21st Century, a reworking of a number of Powell's pieces for big band.

    Mingus in Mono

Disappointed that Dusty Groove hasn't yet carried these. Shipping prices from Japan are currently insane.
  7. Payne recorded two albums for CP Records: in 1961 and 1962. Kelly was busy with Miles in 1961, but looked to be freelance in 1962 and barely recorded in 1963. I see no other dodgy-sounding live recordings in the CP Records box set for this time period. Can you aurally identify any of the other musicians?
  8. It's not in the 30 CD Charlie Parker Records box. There's a photo of the release on this Ebay page: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Winton-Kelly-Cecile-Pain-Live-Wynton-Kelly-Cecil-Payne-Discontinued-Rare-CD-/284103217658 ...and it says "Produced by Aubrey Mayhew." There's also a barcode, if anyone finds that useful. (I see that Jim found a similar photo and posted it above.)
  9. What a project! Many, many thanks. I think this will greatly increase the appreciation of an unjustly-neglected decade.
  10. This was huge, back in the day. I thought it was well-performed. RIP. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suite_for_Flute_and_Jazz_Piano_Trio
  11. Yes, through Amazon. Here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/Slice-Top-Hank-Mobley/dp/B000005H1D/ On the page, it states: This title is manufactured "on demand" when ordered from Amazon.com, using recordable media as authorized by the rights holder. Powered by CreateSpace, this on-demand program makes thousands of titles available that were previously unavailable. For reissued products, packaging may differ from original artwork. Amazon.com’s standard return policy will apply.
  12. I find all this a little more than ironic because, a few months ago, the following started appearing whenever I'd go to Discogs: We Care About Your Privacy We and our partners store and/or access information on a device, such as unique IDs in cookies to process personal data. You may accept or manage your choices by clicking below, including your right to object where legitimate interest is used, or at any time in the privacy policy page. These choices will be signaled to our partners and will not affect browsing data. We and our partners process data to provide: Actively scan device characteristics for identification. Use precise geolocation data. Store and/or access information on a device. Create a personalised content profile. Select personalised content. Apply market research to generate audience insights. Measure content performance. Develop and improve products. Create a personalised ads profile. Select basic ads. Select personalised ads. Measure ad performance. Personalised ads, and ad measurement. This sounded so creepy that I never accepted their terms, and I stopped using Discogs for research. It's pretty disingenuous that they start by saying "We Care About Your Privacy," and then enumerate all the ways they take your personal information and share it with "our partners," whoever they might be.
  13. It do. OK. Change to: Dunkin' donuts are meh, and their coffee is worse. In Houston, we have far better donut offerings. For example, check out Shipley: https://shipleydonuts.com And don't forget kolaches: https://kolachefactory.com. Junk and lunch at the same time!
  14. Krispy Kremes are amazing when hot - look for the neon sign. Dunkin Donuts are meh, and their coffee is worse.
  15. This will prove to be a very valuable resource. Glad you’re doing it.

    Billy Hart Corner

    Another good one:
  17. He gets a lot of solo space on all 3. Perhaps a little less so on The Soul Brotherhood because you also have Blue Mitchell and Fathead, but he still gets his share of solos. All 3 are satisfying organ jazz dates (on the Rusty Bryant, the organist is Sonny Phillips).

    Billy Hart Corner

To be fair, Enchance isn't a real word.
  19. In listening to today's random music selection, I noticed that two albums had Billy Hart on drums: Nick Brignola's Raincheck, and Jimmy & Doug Raney's Stolen Moments. He seems to have popped up a lot lately, at least on my stereo. How many dates has this guy played on, anyway? And he always seems to offer the right accompaniment to whatever style of music's being created. So he definitely deserves his own "corner." What are some of your favorite Billy Hart dates?
  20. Similar hairstyles.
  21. I have two of their World Artists 45s: A Summer Song and Donna, Donna. These songs were big in summer camp, because it was the folk boom and they were easy to sing and strum. RIP.
  22. Received today the latest issue of BBC Music Magazine, and the cover story is on...
  23. What else lurks in the Alan Grant archives? What is available to be released? Are there indications anywhere? Who owns these tapes?
  24. Good luck, Allen.
