Just noticed this on Dusty Groove (https://www.dustygroove.com/item/936090): A real standout in the 70s catalog of reedman Steve Lacy – and that's saying a lot, given that he gave us so many fantastic records in the decade! The album's proof that the Horo Records label had a great knack for capturing key players in some different, but fantastic formations – and here, Lacy is blowing soprano sax alongside ex-MEV members Alvin Curran and Frederic Rzewski – in a unique quality that's very different than many of Lacy's other recordings of the 70s. Curran's got his usual mad edge – and plays synthesizer, percussion, and flugelhorn – while Rzewski contributes some nicely restrained dark lines on acoustic piano. Titles include "Skirts", "Threads", "Rabbit", and "Broils". Could this be a legitimate re-release, and could there be more Horo coming?

The same company (Warner Music Group - X5 Music Group) has released a lot of others, all download-only, for $7.99. X5 is the company that releases those really cheap classical sets ("The 99 Most Essential Saint-Saens Masterpieces," etc.), which, no surprise, sell really well because of their low prices. I guess they've convinced Warner Music Group to lease some of their older releases through them. Smart move. John Scofield Live is truly excellent. It's a quartet, with Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Joe LaBarbera, from 1977. Just make sure it's the expanded CD version, not the original LP.

I found it by first going to amazon.co.uk (using your link) and copying the ASIN #. I then pasted that into the search box on Amazon's US site. This is a good technique to keep in mind in general; I've used it to find Original Album Classics releases that don't seem to come up using word searches.

I agree, that's pretty awful.

It probably has more to do with the economics of running a jazz label these days. Looking at the back cover of the Ronnie Cuber release reveals that Nils Winther not only produced, but also did the mix, mastering, and, yes, the photos. Anyway, these photos and covers are nowhere near as bad as Pablo in its prime. See, for example: At lease Nils Winther springs for color.

For those thinking of buying "The Bethlehem Years," note that it contains only half of "Winner's Circle" (the half on which Coltrane played).

"Birdology" is Royal Roost material, circa 1949. Probably all on the Savoy box. "Bird At The Apollo" also contains tracks by Stan Getz, Timmy Rogers (comedian), and Sarah Vaughan. Probably about 20 minutes of Bird on the disc. See: http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/BirdSessions.aspx?s=500817 "The Happy Bird" has some performances with Howard McGhee that I don't think are available elsewhere. Still, a "private" recording, not audiophile. Same is true of the Pres titles. The other titles listed were all original to CP Records. I suppose there's potential for an audio upgrade, depending on their source materials.

I sympathize. My Epson scanner still works after the upgrade, but my Amadeus music program no longer burns to my CD drive. Waiting for a fix. On my iPhone, my Remote app no longer connects to my desktop.

It’s more a Blakey album (the original title was Art Blakey Big Band). Coltrane gets some short solos. The album is such an outlier in Blakey’s catalog that I wonder what the back story was. It’s good, though.
