  1. Thanks for posting that. Texas has a great jazz history.
  2. There's your answer, courtesy of Discogs: "2cd packed in foldout digipack, part of a 20set miles davis collection madi in the EU. Tracks 1.5, 1.6, and 2.3 is not originally on LP, but is previously issued on the japaneese Miles Davis Album "Miles! Miles! Miles!" (CBS/Sony SRCS 6513/14) November 1, 1992." 3. Just noticed that the version of We Want Miles available in Japan has 3 extra tracks: Ursula, Aida, and Fat Time. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/SICP-4019
  4. Finally got to listen to disc 1 of this: It's the recent Japanese release of the Black Lion material, on Muzak records (I kid you not), licensed by Black Lion. The complete session on two discs: one solo, one with the McKibbon/Blakey trio. Sound quality is gorgeous. I've owned this material in the past (on crackly US Black Lion vinyl), and it was such a delight to hear it again. Monk sounds spry and relaxed. I've never heard the outtakes before, and the last track on disc one struck me as something in another category. Titled "Chordially (Improvisation)," I'm not sure there's anything like it in the Monk canon. It reminded me of Debussy. Can't wait to hear disc two.
  5. I don't regret buying the MJQ box. Perhaps not the most exciting approach to jazz, but there's a lot of substance to their playing. The Jamal on the other hand... I kinda think this suffices:

Thanks for the tip, Kate. But what will this consist of? And what is "Lips first six+"?

That was great. Heartwarming. Great shots in Rudy's.
  8. One of the reasons the New York Press (see my post above) made such a stir was that it was free. It contained all the event listings that were also in the Voice, but it was free, while the Voice was (I think) 50 cents. To combat this, the Voice became free in Manhattan only (which is where the Press was available). This led to the absurd situation where you had to pay for the Voice if you were in Brooklyn or Queens (or Chicago or Dallas, evidently).
  9. As a tween, I thought it was a weak-tea version of The East Village Other. When that folded, I went to the VV as the best source of live music listings, and for the quality of their music and film columnists (Christgau, Giddins, Sarris). I thought their political coverage was silly. Somewhere in the '90's, a great free alternative emerged: The New York Press, and I quickly switched to them. The Voice was little more than an afterthought to me after that.
  10. Amazon shows a release date of November 2: https://www.amazon.com/Detroit-Strat-Concert-Gallery-Selden/dp/B07GWGL7G7/ref=sr_1_139?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1536198304&sr=1-139&refinements=p_n_date%3A1249114011
  11. It's a learning moment.
  12. They had a used copy of one LP I really wanted (Rosemary Clooney - With Love). I tacked on 4 other items to the order just because I was in the mood. The order arrived today with the Clooney title listed as "sold out." I wouldn't have placed the order at all if I had known that; needless to say, they took my order including the Clooney title. I'll think long and hard before buying from them again.
  13. RIP. One of the true giants, in more ways than one.
  14. I picked up a used copy of this at the Mosaic warehouse sale in March, and listened to it tonight. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. Wow! The mood, the charts, the playing, Eddie Jefferson, it was all so enjoyable. The liner notes indicate that this CD (OJCCD-1837) and two others (Hi Fi Party, OJCCD-1780, and Wail Moody Wail, OJCCD-1791) chronologically resequence 7 sessions that were broken up on prior LPs. The others seem hard to come by, now. Looking further, I see a whole bunch of sessions on Argo and EmArcy that need proper re-releases. Wish that could happen. Moody was magnificent.
  15. I realize now that this task is harder than I thought, because Francis Wolff used lenses and lighting to create black backgrounds; in other words, the venetian blinds may very well have been in the background of some covers, but cannot be seen. For example: But inside the booklet: Actually, the blinds can be seen behind Jenkins: Curtains (aka drapes): Venetian blinds: Drapes: Drapes (hard to see, but behind the ensemble shot): Drapes (originally on Savoy; the Kodak Brownie quality gives it away):

  20. I have so many questions about the computer software industry. For example, the software Scott recommended (anymp4). It's free. What do they get out of providing it?
  21. Thanks! I'll check it out.
