  1. As a tween, I thought it was a weak-tea version of The East Village Other. When that folded, I went to the VV as the best source of live music listings, and for the quality of their music and film columnists (Christgau, Giddins, Sarris). I thought their political coverage was silly. Somewhere in the '90's, a great free alternative emerged: The New York Press, and I quickly switched to them. The Voice was little more than an afterthought to me after that.
  2. Amazon shows a release date of November 2: https://www.amazon.com/Detroit-Strat-Concert-Gallery-Selden/dp/B07GWGL7G7/ref=sr_1_139?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1536198304&sr=1-139&refinements=p_n_date%3A1249114011
  3. It's a learning moment.
  4. They had a used copy of one LP I really wanted (Rosemary Clooney - With Love). I tacked on 4 other items to the order just because I was in the mood. The order arrived today with the Clooney title listed as "sold out." I wouldn't have placed the order at all if I had known that; needless to say, they took my order including the Clooney title. I'll think long and hard before buying from them again.
  5. RIP. One of the true giants, in more ways than one.
  6. I picked up a used copy of this at the Mosaic warehouse sale in March, and listened to it tonight. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. Wow! The mood, the charts, the playing, Eddie Jefferson, it was all so enjoyable. The liner notes indicate that this CD (OJCCD-1837) and two others (Hi Fi Party, OJCCD-1780, and Wail Moody Wail, OJCCD-1791) chronologically resequence 7 sessions that were broken up on prior LPs. The others seem hard to come by, now. Looking further, I see a whole bunch of sessions on Argo and EmArcy that need proper re-releases. Wish that could happen. Moody was magnificent.
  7. I realize now that this task is harder than I thought, because Francis Wolff used lenses and lighting to create black backgrounds; in other words, the venetian blinds may very well have been in the background of some covers, but cannot be seen. For example: But inside the booklet: Actually, the blinds can be seen behind Jenkins: Curtains (aka drapes): Venetian blinds: Drapes: Drapes (hard to see, but behind the ensemble shot): Drapes (originally on Savoy; the Kodak Brownie quality gives it away):

  9. Couldn't find it on their site.

  11. Grant Green’s “First Session” is another one.
  12. I have so many questions about the computer software industry. For example, the software Scott recommended (anymp4). It's free. What do they get out of providing it?
  13. Thanks! I'll check it out.
  14. There's an interesting site called redhotjazz.com. Lots of old 78's available for download. However, they are all in Real Audio format (.ra). Does anyone know how to play these on a current Mac (High Sierra)?
  15. While doing some research (aka wasting time) on Amazon, I stumbled across these. I can't imagine listening to one of these from start to finish, but I am intrigued. These are full performances.

    Warne Marsh

I wasn't thrilled with the Konitz "Live at the Half Note." I think there was a reason it wasn't released at the time, and that was Bill Evans, who sounds (to these ears) drugged out and aimless. Whatever groove the group is whipping up gets doused by Evans's comping and solos. YMMV, of course. BTW, the mp3 of that album goes for $6.93: https://www.amazon.com/Live-Half-Note-Lee-Konitz/dp/B00FBO354S/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1535579055&sr=1-1-mp3-albums-bar-strip-0&keywords=konitz+half+note

    Warne Marsh

Thought I'd mention this one. I'm not enough of an expert on Marsh's discography to know which ones are truly primo, but this one seems unusual in that Marsh shares the front line with a guitarist (Ron Eschete) rather than a pianist:
  18. Also sounded like they were apologizing to JSngry (or someone much like him), i.e. the reference to "pressure."
  19. Just to be clear, the "quote" function makes it seem that I said the quote beginning "That's another reason..." Didn't come from me.
  20. That's like saying "live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse." That's great for dramatic affect: image, marketing, and leaving an impact, but... Can we transpose this with the recent Sonny Rollins thread, and wonder whether Sonny (God-forbid) should have died after his Impulse contract ended...you know, "right on schedule?" It might have kept a tighter focus on his achievements to that point, but we would have been bereft of all that great music on Milestone and in his concerts from the '70's onwards. We simply can't know what Coltrane might have produced had he survived. It might have been great, it might have been mediocre, it might have been somewhere in between...one thing that's guaranteed, it would have been older. An older Coltrane might have had important value, much as an older Satchmo or Dylan have had. Also, his music might have reverted to something more traditional. I sometimes think, for some people, that was their real beef with Rollins's music from the 70's onwards: it was pretty, it was song-form, it was tuneful and melodic. He wasn't trying to break new ground; he just wanted to play pretty for the people. I think that rankled some core jazz listeners, who wanted more "political" statements.
