  1. I owned Film Noir when it came out (got a promo copy). It didn't make much of an impression on me. Some people like that sort of thing; more power to them.
  2. I own the box; there's a lot of excellent music there.
  3. I'm interested in the Jazz Icons box; good discount.

  6. RIP.
  7. Yeah, that baseline carried through even over a tinny transistor radio. Classic.
  8. I was never in love with ALS. Sounds like one long chant to me.
  9. Now available from Dusty Groove:
  10. There were two components to the book mentioned in Teachout's review. One was about Playboy, but the other was the use of jazz as makeout music. I firmly believe that's the reason Kind Of Blue is the largest selling jazz album in history.
  11. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Mr. Cobb.
  12. That was a hoppin' cut embedded in the article! And while his passing is sad, I'm sure that's how he'd like to be remembered: playing music that satisfied the intellect and made you move! RIP.
  13. Or change "Miscellaneous Music" into two different sub-forums: "Miscellaneous - Jazz" and "Miscellaneous Music - Non-Jazz".
  14. Exactly how did jazz acquire this curious cultural cachet? I commend your attention to “Playboy Swings!: How Hugh Hefner and Playboy Changed the Face of Music,” a well-researched, fascinatingly detailed new book by Patty Farmer that comes out next month. Written with the assistance of Will Friedwald, a frequent contributor to the Journal, “Playboy Swings!” goes a long way toward answering that question. Full review here: WSJ (Full article title: The Man Who Made Jazz Sexy. You may need to Google the title to read the article.)

Where is there a track listing for the 18-disc set? Edit: Never mind, I found it: http://www.bobdylan.com/us/thecuttingedge_completetracklisting I'd love to have this accessible in a library where I can hear it, but buy it? No.

And for the same reason, I predict that next year's project will be a release of the complete 1966 tour.

  19. I have this, which is enough for me; it contains 5 of the 8 albums:
  20. The next Horowitz box is now listed on Amazon, with a release date of October 23:

I think one big reason they're releasing the 18-disc set is for the same purpose they released this and its predecessors: for copyright reasons: (and to make some real money from it).
  22. At this moment, I don't know that I need any of it. An entire disc of LARS? To offer an analogy, I love Charlie Chaplin shorts. They're a marvel of lyricism, humor and astonishment. In the '90's, a series appeared called The Unknown Chaplin. Through outtakes, it showed the painstaking work that went into his short films. For me, it removed the magic: I saw the work that went into the films rather than simply being able to enjoy them.
  23. I prefer the Clark tunes fleshed out by a quintet on the My Conception album.
