Maybe Cuscuna struck a special deal with EMI regarding this set.
-
Also, these sets tend to go up in price after the initial release date.

He also has a Grachan Moncur Select for $49.

But how does that artist acquire his/her audience? The record labels were instrumental in finding/grooming new talent and showcasing them to potential audiences. As Jim mentioned, WS3 has unreleased tapes of his father's, which I guess is a nice position to be in. There is an audience for his music, based in no small part by Columbia's promotions. Muse kept the flame going. Even now, Mosaic is showcasing Shaw's music. People know how to find Mosaic's website; they may come across the Shaw box while looking for something else. If WS3 puts out a release, how will people find it? Word of mouth? Who will vouch for the sound quality or the music's quality? (Look at photograph #2 above; do you want to buy music recorded on a TDK D90?). And Woody Shaw is a known quantity. Look at how many unknowns release their music via CD Baby (to get some idea, go onto eMusic's website and peruse their new release section). Even though the music creator retains a far larger percentage of every sale, how many sales do you think they really have?

Cyrille is a real force of nature. He's 75! Saw him last year with Trio 3, and enjoyed the Black Saint box.

Jenny Scheinman, a violinist, singer and composer who performed recently at the Village Vanguard, has crafted distinctive careers in two contrasting musical genres, progressing in both at an impressive pace.... July 21 saw the debut of Ms. Scheinman’s latest instrumental group at the Village Vanguard, where she performed through July 26. The band features Myra Melford on piano and harmonium, Doug Wieselman on clarinet and bass clarinet, and Rudy Royston on drums. Ms. Scheinman said the lineup’s absence of a bass appealed to her—not only highlighting the lower tones of the piano, the bass drum and bass clarinet, but allowing the bass’s timekeeping responsibilities to rotate among the band members. Are there any box bargains currently available?
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Not jazz: There is a new series called Greatest Ever! I bought through Amazon Marketplace the title "Greatest Ever! Reggae The Definitive Collection." 3 CDs, excellent selection, currently $6.34 plus shipping. Although no label can be seen on the graphics, on the bottom of the box there is a Universal logo, so it's legit. Lots of other titles in the series: Nineties, New Wave Hits, Movie Hits, Punk & New Wave, etc. Worth taking a look. And I have a question - for myself, but in the belief that confession is good for the soul: How did this so-called "Dexaholic" never buy this? Was I never aware of it? I have a hard time believing that. Did my awareness pre-date my appreciation for Gene Ammons and I didn't want to hear a tenor battle? (don't think so because the 1940s 'battle' recordings were some of the earliest Dex I owned.) I am proud (and yet somewhat ashamed) to say that the OJC reissue is on it's way from a seller in GA so at least I'll be able to say that I finally heard this one soon. And only 25 years late, give or take. Confession's good for the soul, and this record's even better!

I once had some of this material on a Trip 2-LP set. How does the Fresh Sound compare - does it have better sound? I remember the music having a nice kind of energy, but Lee was low in the mix.

I bought mine recently on Ebay from bluenotesound, and I think they have more to sell, so watch for it there.

Less than 500 left unsold of the 30 Trips box.

Born Priscilla White in Liverpool, Black changed her name to launch a singing career with hits such as Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World. Her career focus shifted to television in 1968, when she was given her own BBC One primetime series, and she went on to host a number of shows for ITV. Black's journey to stardom began at Liverpool's famous Cavern Club, where she started work as a part-time cloakroom attendant. It was there she met her husband-to-be Bobby Willis and went on to perform alongside such acts as The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers. She was soon brought to the attention of manager Brian Epstein and released her first single, Love of the Loved, in September 1963. The following year she released the ballads You're My World and Anyone Who Had a Heart, both of which went to number one. BBC News Mirror

Groovin' now to the Art Hodes set. Very nice indeed.

So I'm trying the spacesavingsleeves, with an order of the paper inserts for when needed. So far, I like the results. I've considered for a long time whether this is a good idea. What helped sway me were the classical and jazz box sets that Sony, WEA and Universal are selling. In each, the disc is kept within a paper facsimile of the original cover. I can't see any damage done to the discs as a result of this storage.

Quick! What is the longest single jazz track that's good?

If you want to expand your horizons a little, download a track of Indian music. For example, this album has two tracks that are over 50 minutes long, each for 99 cents: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JPTIEMS/ref=dm_ws_sp_ps_dp If you want more choice, just do an Amazon search for "raga." -
I have a question maybe Chuck can answer, regarding the Gene Ammons & Dex Prestige album "The Chase!" The liner notes mention that Don Byas was also at this concert. Was he recorded?

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
mjzee replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Agreed that it was a great series, wish it could have continued. I have 13: 2) Carmell Jones, 3) Bennie Green, 4) Randy Weston, 6) John Patton, 7) Curtis Amy, 11) Dizzy Reece, 14) Dexter Gordon (d/l), 15) Art Pepper, 21) Gerry Mulligan, 22) Sidney Bechet, 26) Bobby Hutcherson (d/l), 27) Cohn, Newman & Green, 30) Boogie Woogie & Blues Piano. -
I'll be preordering this; my first Mosaic preorder. I remember when these albums came out, and owned "Fire and Filigree."

What I do in a case like that is record the CD onto a CDR. I have a recording CD deck as part of my stereo, and can make an exact digital copy of the defective disc (because it's weird; sometimes the CD will get that clicking at the end of a disc on my computer but will play fine on my CD deck - and, interestingly, I've only had this problem with discs from Universal). The CDR disc will then play perfectly on my computer. Weird, I know.

new Release: Matt Shipp Plays the Music of Allen Lowe
mjzee replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Good news! Eager to hear this. -
Is "Enterplanetary Koncepts" a legit label? I note that they have 4 albums available at Amazon mp3 for $5 each. Two are Horos: New Steps and Other Voices, Other Blues.

Miles's. When it's a person's name, it's always 's, even when the name ends with an s.
