  2. Thanks, Jim. Could you perhaps edit this so the WSJ web software won't reject it (re "fuck" and the like), and just tidy it up a little? Then I'll post. Or I can edit it, just let me know.
  3. i want to say that on April 27 of that year duke was in nyc recording parts of the new orleans suite. and that here, he is unknowingly reviewing the same take, one with vocal and one without. Afrique "The second take features a duet between a reserved, probing tenor saxophonist and Ellington, who takes an arch, minimalist approach to the song. The third rendition features vocalese, big organ swells from Davis, and an abstract tenor saxophone solo." OK, posted.
  4. Let me know what you want to say, and I'll add them.
  5. Just add some comments to the article. I'm sure they read them.
  6. It wasn't a stroke; it was a brain aneurism.

  8. This looks like it was taken from jazzdisco.org. Does anyone here have Ruppli's Prestige discography?
  9. Received today in good condition. Can't wait to hear it.
  10. Huh? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_and_the_Dominos If it's not the same Bobby Whitlock, please ignore.
  11. Pop market has the All The Years Combine DVD box today only for $69.99, which is the cheapest price I've seen.
  12. Derek & The Dominoes, anyone? Joe Cocker, Leon Russell? Talk about second acts. RIP.
  13. Trey's is really a thankless task. If this was an organic band with a future, he might turn these songs in interesting directions. Instead, he must simply make the familiar interesting and lively. You can sense he loves the music and doesn't take his task lightly. The spotlight is also on him for long stretches of time. Bob has kinda receded into the background; it seems more like Phil's band now.
  14. I caught the tail end of tonight's show via an unofficial audio stream, and have seen a fair chunk of the Santa Clara shows via the various YouTube bits that have been posted. Gotta admit that I've found myself more interested in these shows than I thought I would be - I had fairly low expectations, but was intrigued by the idea of the "Treyful Dead" more than I ever was by any of the other post-Jerry attempts to resuscitate the band. From what I've seen, they've acquitted themselves as well as could have reasonably been expected, and one is definitely conscious of all the history that has gone before, knowing that this is likely the last time we'll ever see these guys onstage together playing these songs. It's really not any of that. That history and nostalgia might bring you to the shows, but the show tonight was just plain enjoyable. Trey was good; there was not enough of Hornsby's piano (there were problems with the mix). Bob's voice was pretty good tonight (considering), and Phil's was a little better. I also liked that they didn't play to nostalgia with their "greatest hits"; instead, we got a lot from Blues For Allah and out-of-left-field choices like Mason's Children. And I loved that the encore was Ripple (rather than, as has been trumpeted, Brokedown Palace - because of the tie-in with the "Fare Thee Well" theme). I was bopping in front of my computer. Hey, $30 - how can you go wrong?
  15. Watching tonight's Soldier Field show on YouTube PPV. Intermission right now.
  16. I've started listening to the Sidney Bechet BN set on LP I recently picked up on Ebay. I thought the LP length was nicely suited to the music - 6 tracks on a side was just perfect (though I had to get up to turn the disc over). Great music, nice sound. I had most of this material on other releases, but this allowed me to appreciate the music anew.
  17. I'd tend to agree I was surprised when I heard it, because it didn't sound like the Hank Jones I knew. I haven't listened to it in many years; should pull it out. (As an aside, I also remember really bad surface noise on the transfers - more like a Yazoo reissue.) As for other '50's Hank Jones, I found some Savoy LP reissues not long ago, and really enjoyed them. The Trio + Bobby Jaspar date is rewarding.
  18. I have it. It's not as "intense" as some of the others mentioned here. On the other hand, the tunes are longer than on most other live Bird sets: Scrapple From The Apple, Cool Blues and Au Privave/Dance of the Infidels are each 13 minutes long. Charlie Parker (as), Frank Morgan (as), Don Wilkerson (ts), Amost Trice (p), Dave Bryant (b), Lawrence Marable (d). Guest star: Chet Baker (tp on #5). 7/14/52. It's definitely worth hearing, but not as essential as many others mentioned here.
  19. Indeed, jazz reissue CD's are alive and well in Japan. Blue Note just had a bunch of interesting titles reissued the last two months there. When's the last time they reissued catalog titles in the US? 2009 or something like that? No, much more recently. This year, they issued the Miles, Coltrane and Clifford Brown titles, plus all of the LP reissues. I don't count those three, they were just bogus repackagings of easily available stuff for newbies. Don't keep up with LP issues, so will take your word on them. List of BN U.S. vinyl reissues.
  20. I think because they capture the fun of music, and of people not taking it all so seriously. Sort of like Instagram filters.
  21. I just listened to Ornithology from a date at the Finale Club, LA, March 1946, with Miles, Joe Albany, Addison Farmer and Chuck Thompson. Very interesting stuff. Joe Albany made a big difference in the performance - he's more of an integral part of the sound and the band, rather than just support. In just a small way, Miles and Bird change their performance style here - a little more structured. Ornithology even has a slightly different arrangement in the bridge! It was really enjoyable, and worth checking out. It's included on the "Chasin' The Bird" Proper box.
