The Elusive Girl From Ipanema
mjzee replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
They state that in the article: "At the time, bossa nova wasn't exactly unknown in the U.S., as shown by the Grammy-winning success of "Desafinado" from the 1962 album "Jazz Samba" by Stan Getz and Charlie Parker." They obviously mistook Charlie Byrd for Charlie "Bird" Parker. -
I'd like to beam an audio signal throughout my house, sort of my own radio station. I'm thinking of using an old Mac with an EHD holding my music library. iTunes on the Mac would beam the music signal. I could then hopefully use Airport Expresses and/or Apple TVs connected to stereos in different rooms. Is this doable? Would each receptor (Airport Express/Apple TV) need some sort of video screen? Will iTunes beam to multiple receptors (Airport Express/Apple TV), or will I need a software program like AirFoil? Ideally, I could use wi-fi iPods to receive the music signal, but I don't know if that's possible. Anyone have thoughts?

I really love this album: It's Too Late and Never Can Say Goodbye...it's like I'm transported back to 1971, but in a groovy way. And Blues Selah is such a funky tune...

Don't know how many of you have seen this article, but there's definitely a creepy, Orwellian aspect to eBook readers: For centuries, reading has largely been a solitary and private act, an intimate exchange between the reader and the words on the page. But the rise of digital books has prompted a profound shift in the way we read, transforming the activity into something measurable and quasi-public. The major new players in e-book publishing—Amazon, Apple and Google—can easily track how far readers are getting in books, how long they spend reading them and which search terms they use to find books. Book apps for tablets like the iPad, Kindle Fire and Nook record how many times readers open the app and how much time they spend reading. Retailers and some publishers are beginning to sift through the data, gaining unprecedented insight into how people engage with books. More here: Your E-Book is reading you - from WSJ

Before 1962, if John Q. Nobody gave any thought to South America at all, it probably didn't range much beyond banana republics, fugitive Nazis and Carmen Miranda. That changed 50 years ago this summer when a tall and tan and young and lovely goddess was born. She was "The Girl From Ipanema." Like a handful of other international crossover hits ("Day-O" from Jamaica, "Down Under" from Australia), "The Girl From Ipanema" pretty much put an entire country's music and ethos on the map. In this case, the land was Brazil, the genre was bossa nova, and the atmosphere was uniquely exotic and elusive—a seductive tropical cocktail "just like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gently," as the lyrics go. In this clip, the scene that begins at 2:07. The setup is that the Jeff Daniels character has a parakeet, and gangsters (don't ask why) want to retaliate against him. But really, you have to see the whole movie to get the flavor of it: You Tube

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought you meant "Stupidest Comedy Movie Ever" in a good sense. For example, Dumb And Dumber is one of my favorite movies. Perhaps the problem with this Adam Sandler movie is it wasn't stupid enough.

Zappa wasn't a racist - just look at his bands (and that was long before it was hip to have integrated rock bands). That doesn't mean he wasn't a major asshole.

Yah, once the hero worship wore off, I saw more of the man behind the curtain... On the other hand, if the material remained strong in the late '70's & '80's, the hero worship may have continued.

For me, Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels, Absolutely Free (for nostalgia's sake; I was 12 when I first bought it), and Fillmore East (absolutely brilliant satire). If you want to narrow it down to one or two, Hot Rats and Uncle Meat. Thanks. What about the other live one -- band from LA or somesuch? Just Another Band From L.A....Billy The Mountain (Side One) is EPIC. I'm sure Side Two was good, but frankly, I can no longer remember it. My reaction's the opposite: BTM tries to make some sort of point, but comes off as scattershot satire. But side 2 has a lot of energy and plays really well...a killer Call Any Vegetable into Eddie Are You Kidding (wonderful Flo & Eddie on this one) into Magdalena (lyrics not for the squeamish, however) ending with some powerful Dog Breath. I didn't recommend JABFLA because many people consider the Flo & Eddie band to be low-level satire and sex jokes. Of the two albums in this batch (3 if you include Chunga's Revenge), I think Fillmore's the strongest and most consistent. My guess is that JABFLA might not have been released if it wasn't that Zappa needed money to pay medical bills following his fall. I'll be curious about Chunga, because the original LP sounded very muffled; I wonder if they'll be able to improve it.
