  1. My main issue with the ECM approach...I don't have a word for it, so I'll give an example. Marc Johnson released a great little album on Verve back in 1998 called The Sound of Summer Running. I think it's the only album he did for Verve. The group had both Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell in it, and the style is in the vein of Frisell's "Americana" work: very tuneful, happy and upbeat. Maybe these were the producer's (Rich Seidel) marching orders, but it helped make for a great record. Then I bought a disc Johnson made for ECM called Shades of Jade. It was everything the Verve disc wasn't: the tunes were amorphous, vague, kinda going nowhere...it was hard to tell why a tune ended when it did, or even what the tune was. It's very possible that Eicher's hands-off approach made the date worse, and that maybe Johnson could've used a Rich Seidel cracking the whip. Just my two cents.
  2. I think ECM has a "sound" that can affect the music. I noticed it on the Roscoe Mitchell "Nine To Get Ready" disc. It's a sheen, a bit of a distance from the music. In fact, I don't understand the argument that it could be otherwise. Haven't we long talked about the affect a producer has on the music, a Bob Weinstock vs an Alfred Lion? Haven't we discussed the sound difference each got from Rudy's studio? And I do think one can wonder how a particular ECM album might have sounded if produced on a different label. From all this, it's a short step to discuss what one thinks of that "sound" and that "approach." Don't some people prefer Blue Notes to Prestiges of the same era, or vice versa? It's just something else to discuss, and one's input (if not too vitriolic) could be interesting to consider.
  3. I thought the problem was that at that point, it is damaging the vinyl.
  4. Especially without the original non-overdubbed tracks available on the Debut box.
  5. I like all the HighNotes. One nice aspect is he largely keeps a consistent band through all of them, stretching about a decade. There was once a thread here about the joys of working bands, mostly centered on the Coltrane classic quartet; these albums show a cohesiveness and empathy. If you don't want to get all the albums, HighNote recently put out a 3-CD compilation: I also want to put in a good word for this one, which I found pretty cheaply on Amazon: Under A Woodstock Moon I don't know that I've heard a bad Fathead record (the only Atlantic I have is Heads Up).
  6. How about Houston?
  7. Around 1987, Allison Rowe came across a white clapboard house for sale on the outskirts of North Stamford. The place was advertised as being owned by a famous musician, but Rowe loved it for its various rustic charms -- a sprawling backyard with a lush garden and lily pond, a kidney-shaped pool, and a separate cathedral-ceilinged studio that had been fashioned from the frame of a horse and buggy barn. She left the negotiations to her mother, Marjorie Rowe, the so-called "grand dame" of Greenwich real estate who founded the firm Preferred Properties. "She called me and said, `The good news is you own Benny Goodman's house. The bad news is you owe $25,000 more.'" 8. I mostly listen to my music on my iPod or computer speakers, so perhaps I'm not the best person to answer that question. I sampled some and they sounded fine.

  10. At LC today I ran across two 1/4" reels of the Mingus score to Shadows. They were recently purchased from Sue, along with some other stuff. Has this music ever been available on it's own (i.e. separated from the film)? The Mingus Dial box set contains a composition written for the film but not used in it. What is the Mingus Dial box? Do you mean the Debut box?
  11. eMusic Unfortunately, the download won't include "16 pages of New Orleans recipes that Louis loved."
  12. Also available on eMusic @ $6.99: eMusic
  13. Oops. I couldn't tell that subscribers can't access this article. Sorry about that!
  14. In November 1962, the Cuban bandleader and percussionist Mongo Santamaría, who had been looking for ways to blend Afro-Cuban music with American jazz, added a funky conga beat to Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" at a Brooklyn club. The result ignited a Latin-soul club craze that eventually influenced jazz, rock and R&B, and continues to thrive at clubs in New York and London to this day. Known in the 1960s as the Latin boogaloo, the rhythmic, slinky dance form was Spanish Harlem's answer to '60s rock and R&B—distinguished on recordings by a chunky beat, English lyrics, hand-clapping and the sounds of a party going on. 15. "All Our Reasons", due for release March 16, along with an Anders Jormin title. There'll be a giveaway for All Our Reasons at AAJ later this month or early next month. Billy Hart's All Our Reasons surprises me. I thought that it would be fairly mainstream, or as mainstream as ECM gets. But instead it is quite ECM-ish. I'll need to listen to it more to decide how much I like it. I wasn't a fan of the HighNote release; just didn't move me:
  16. I don't think Cal Collins did that many. This is a favorite: Lorne Lofsky released one album on Pablo (produced by Oscar Peterson) that I really liked: Finally, a personal favorite is Ron Affif. Released a few albums on Pablo. Check this one out: And can I bring up Russell Malone? Yes, he's had some albums, but it's not like he's that well-known. I like the Jazz Standard discs:
  17. I assume third-party software updates are separate from OS updates, just as with Windows. Correct. Adobe updates have to be applied separately. But the virus was distributed by means of a corrupted Adobe Flash installer - it fooled the system into thinking it was an "official" Adobe update when it was anything but. The most recent OSX patch was to close this hole. If the official Apple patch didn't work, that would be really dismaying.
  18. I've applied all the OSX system updates, and I'm still getting reminders to update Adobe Flash. Are these reminders now to be trusted?
  19. Thanks for reviving this thread. It seems the original Bat Chain Puller can now be ordered at the Barfko site. (What an annoying site, by the way...try to figure out what's on the discs they're selling!)
  20. I got this: Vasant Rai - $1.98
  21. For the past half-century, as every aspect of pop culture has shifted around them, the same Dixieland-style jazz band has held the same weekly slot at the same Manhattan nightclub. It's a 50-year feat of endurance and consistency virtually unmatched in the city's musical history, and for good reason: Few venues or bands remain viable over that length of time. But the Grove Street Stompers have kept it going for five decades, and Arthur's Tavern in the West Village has kept the group on its calendar every Monday since 1962. More here: WSJ
  22. I passed by there around February. There was a sign on the door that she was out for a hip replacement, but that she would reopen "hipper than ever!"
  23. Glad to hear that Sally's is back open.
  24. It pretty much would have to be. It sounds pretty clean to these non-audiophile ears.
