  1. Britain's Hotel Indigo Newcastle may see an increase in thefts for the remainder of the year, and not because people are pilfering robes. The hotel is testing a two-week pilot program ending on July 16 that replaces traditional paper Bibles with Amazon Kindles. When a guest opens a nightstand drawer in search of some late-night reading, they will find an e-reader loaded with the Good Book, instead of the iconic Gideon's Bible, a hotel press release said. 2. No, this was absolutely a Blue Note cover, both front and back. I guess an open question is in what country was this issued? The next time I go there, I'll try to snap a picture of that part of the table. Actually, Dan, the next time you're in the area, you should check out the restaurant: Coalhouse Pizza. Really good pizza and excellent menu; don't knock it until you try it.
  3. Same here.
  4. So I've started using the AEX to stream music into a different room in the house. It works well, but I'm noticing one drawback: on playback (at least on my main computer), there are little breaks in the music. I think it happens when the computer is communicating with "the cloud."
  5. There's a pizza place in Stamford that's jazz- and blues-themed: paintings on the walls, laminated tabletops each devoted to a different artist with magazine excerpts, CD covers, photos, etc. (The music they play, though, is always rock-based: Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Matthews.) We sat at the Art Blakey table last weekend, and on the tabletop, there was a cover of a Blue Note release from Stockholm, Sweden, 11/23/59. Did this ever come out? A search of Amazon and jazzdisco.org revealed nothing.
  6. I was listening to "Piazza Navona" from the MJQ Mosaic set (originally from The Comedy lp), and it occurred to me that a short snippet of it would make a great ringtone. Which other jazz performances, 5 - 10 seconds in length, would make a wonderful ringtone?
  7. BRUSSELS—Universal Music Group Inc. has asked for more time to respond to concerns from European Union regulators over the company's proposed acquisition of the recording arm of EMI Group Ltd. and now is expected to reply by Thursday night, people close to the matter said Wednesday. The request signaled that the company was attempting to respond to a raft of complaints by antitrust regulators, set out in a document nearly 200 pages long. The initial deadline to respond to antitrust concerns was Tuesday and was extended to midnight Thursday. Universal was expected to submit its reply in time for the deadline, a person with close knowledge of the matter said. Complete article: WSJ
  8. With the V-DAC, some reviewers suggest replacing the power supply. Did you do that, or is the one that came with the unit OK?
  9. I'd like to beam an audio signal throughout my house, sort of my own radio station. I'm thinking of using an old Mac with an EHD holding my music library. iTunes on the Mac would beam the music signal. I could then hopefully use Airport Expresses and/or Apple TVs connected to stereos in different rooms. Is this doable? Would each receptor (Airport Express/Apple TV) need some sort of video screen? Will iTunes beam to multiple receptors (Airport Express/Apple TV), or will I need a software program like AirFoil? Ideally, I could use wi-fi iPods to receive the music signal, but I don't know if that's possible. Anyone have thoughts? Fortunately it is much simpler than that! old Mac + EHD, running iTunes, will work just fine as a digital source purchase an Airport Express (AEX) for each room that you want to play music in iTunes has a little piece of software that recognizes each AEX and so you will be able to beam to the AEX of your choose (or multiple AEXs simultaneously) the AEX then needs to be connected to a power source which is of course connected to your speakers as Deuterium mentions above, you can bypass the DAC in the AEX by using a digital cable to connect the AEX to a separate DAC, which then connects to the power source this step is optional I go this route for my two "serious" listening rooms but go straight from the AEX to the power source in my daughter's bedroom* if you have one, you can then use your iPod, iPad or iPhone as a remote there are plenty of audiophile enhancements that can be made (which I have not), but this will get you up and running and enjoying music happy to explain further if you like * in her room I have bypassed the separate power source as the AEX is connected to these powered speakers: http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-2 What's a good source (magazine, website, etc) to learn about various hardware and software items that are out there? For example, from where can I learn more about the DACs that are available? At some point, I'll need to get a new receiver, and it'd be nice to reimagine my system to best suit my current needs.
  10. Believe it or not, those same downloads are now down to 99 cents each! WTF?!? Amazon

I'm enjoying this now. Some of it sounds very Blue Note-ish:
  12. I don't think you can search for just a three-letter word; it won't return any results. I think the search term needs to be at least four letters long. Many posters have mentioned that the best way to search Organissimo is to use Google.
  13. Amazon has a one-day sale today. No jazz, but some interesting recent pop albums for $1.99. I got Regina Spektor and the Black Keys; I already had the Beach Boys and Lionel Richie (don't laugh; it's a nice album!). Amazon
  14. I see that, using the Remote app! Very cool. Weird that the one thing you can't do is actually have the iPod play the broadcasted feed, like the AppleTV or the AEX will.

This is really helpful. Will an Apple TV work instead of an AEX? An Apple TV is the same price as an AEX, so getting some of those may offer more possibilities in the long run.
  16. They state that in the article: "At the time, bossa nova wasn't exactly unknown in the U.S., as shown by the Grammy-winning success of "Desafinado" from the 1962 album "Jazz Samba" by Stan Getz and Charlie Parker." They obviously mistook Charlie Byrd for Charlie "Bird" Parker.

  18. I really love this album: It's Too Late and Never Can Say Goodbye...it's like I'm transported back to 1971, but in a groovy way. And Blues Selah is such a funky tune...
  19. Don't know how many of you have seen this article, but there's definitely a creepy, Orwellian aspect to eBook readers: For centuries, reading has largely been a solitary and private act, an intimate exchange between the reader and the words on the page. But the rise of digital books has prompted a profound shift in the way we read, transforming the activity into something measurable and quasi-public. The major new players in e-book publishing—Amazon, Apple and Google—can easily track how far readers are getting in books, how long they spend reading them and which search terms they use to find books. Book apps for tablets like the iPad, Kindle Fire and Nook record how many times readers open the app and how much time they spend reading. Retailers and some publishers are beginning to sift through the data, gaining unprecedented insight into how people engage with books. More here: Your E-Book is reading you - from WSJ
  20. Before 1962, if John Q. Nobody gave any thought to South America at all, it probably didn't range much beyond banana republics, fugitive Nazis and Carmen Miranda. That changed 50 years ago this summer when a tall and tan and young and lovely goddess was born. She was "The Girl From Ipanema." Like a handful of other international crossover hits ("Day-O" from Jamaica, "Down Under" from Australia), "The Girl From Ipanema" pretty much put an entire country's music and ethos on the map. In this case, the land was Brazil, the genre was bossa nova, and the atmosphere was uniquely exotic and elusive—a seductive tropical cocktail "just like a samba that swings so cool and sways so gently," as the lyrics go. 21. Also, the Woody box is newer. Its price will come down eventually.
  22. I think they're collected here: Amazon Haven't heard them, though.
  23. I bought it a few months ago for $18 and change.
  24. In general, do people haggle prices, or is the price the price?
