Are there any box bargains currently available?
mjzee replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Along the lines of the Ray Charles box, I ordered this from an Amazon Reseller - about $40 with shipping: Atlantic R&B Box Set -
Interviewing Ethan Iverson and Billy Hart in a jazz club is like trying to catch simultaneous Pitt and Jolie gazes on the red carpet. The competition, a steady stream of kibitzers and well-wishers, is fierce, but the struggle illustrates what the two musicians have in common. Iverson, a white, 39-year-old pianist raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Hart, a black, D.C.-born drummer who turned 71 last November—bandmates in the quartet that performs and records under Hart’s name, as on a beautiful new ECM LP, All Our Reasons—both relish the age-old jazz tradition known as the Hang. Whether or not you’re performing, you show up and engage in chitchat that’s light and often profane (“That’s the real shit,” Hart whispered to Iverson as he watched Marion Felder play vintage N’awlins-style drums at Birdland this past February, prior to Hart’s own gig with the quintet Contact), but dead serious in its way. Between sets, Hart and Felder traded obeisances as Iverson geeked out over classical virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin with fellow pianist Ehud Asherie. More here: TONY

I'd like to defend repetition, if I may. Every forum needs a steady stream of postings or interest will just dry up. Would we continue to check out Organissimo if nothing was being posted? Not everything people say, in real life or on the 'Net, can be pithy, piquant and original. In the workplace, people talk all the time without saying much of interest. "Hey, how about those Mets?" I think it's been especially challenging here since New Releases have pretty much dried up. So if we talk, then chatter on.

Sonny Rollins album on PERIOD....where to hear it
mjzee replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Keep in mind that only 3 tracks have the Rollins group. Side 2 of the LP had a Thad Jones ensemble. Ironically, those tracks are now hard to find. -
What's the best source to purchase these from?

Dylan and The Band at the Isle of Wight 1969. Looks like it was captured on a video recorder. Interesting to see Dylan's stage mannerisms haven't changed much since then. YouTube

Who has time to watch something like this?

I remember when I worked in a jazz record store in the late '70's, all of a sudden everyone was asking for Jazz At The Pawnshop. It was an import then and very hard to obtain, so we only got a few copies at a time and they always sold out immediately. And this was a 2-LP import, very expensive. Nowadays, you can download it from eMusic: eMusic

Half a million Mac computers 'infected with malware'

I read an article on this exploit a few weeks ago. The problems is that the Flash Updater program got hacked, and that's the trojan horse (complete with Adobe logos) that's used. If I get a notice to update Flash, I go to the Adobe website. -
are there jazz standards you strongly dislike?

I've always wanted to post this somewhere on the board, and now seems like a good time. I hope I'm not infringing on any copyright here. In my cassette copy of "The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Quartet" (A&M, originally on Artists House), the following was included in the liner notes. I've always found it interesting and useful: Compositions using the chord progression from "What Is This Thing Called Love" by Cole Porter. 1. "Barry's Bop" (also called "Fat's Flats") by Fats Navarro 2. "Becoming" by Lennie Trlstano 3. "Bunny" by Teddy Charles 4. "Cette Chose" by Robert Jaspar 5. "Coolhouse" by Warne Marsh 6. "Dell's Bells" by Charles Laguna 7. "Fifth House" by John Coltrane 8. "Hot House" by Tadd Dameron 9. "Llke ... What Is This" by Bernard McKlnney 10. "Madhouse" by Jackie McLean 11. "One Hundred Proof" by J J Johnson 12. "Samba De Bamba" by Les McCann 13. "Serenade To A Pair Of Nylons" by Charlie Shavers 14. "Sputnik" by Lou Donaldson 15. "Subconscious-Lee" by Lee Konitz 16. "Supersonic" by Lennie Tristano 17. "These Things Called Changes" by Bill Evans 18. "This Is Called Love" by Charlie Haden and Hampton Hawes 19. "This Is The Thing" by Hal Galper 20. "This Thing" by Ronnie Hoopes 21. "Trilogy Pogo" by Charles Mingus 22. "Wham Bam Thank You, Ma'am" by Charles Mingus 23. "What Is It?" by Pepper Adams 24. "What Is This Thing?"' by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis 25. "You Tell Me" by John Coltrane From: "The New Expanded Bibiography of Jazz Compositions Based On The Chord Progressions of Standard Tunes" © 1974 Reese Markewich, M.D. -

i don't recall hearing a jazz version..... Coltrane on The Stardust Sessions and Charles McPherson on Today's Man to name two, and I like both. Dexter's version (with Philip Catherine) is wonderful. -

Jim, do you have an Amazon link for this one? These are/were Boris Rose recordings, only once issued "legitimately" on, on the Columbia double LP One Night In Birdland. But they've been booted many, many times on many, many labels and in all the traditional formats. Right now, the only reasonably priced item I see on amazon is this one: http://www.amazon.co...33221107&sr=1-1 Jim, do you have an Amazon link for this one? The material has been released in various forms over the years. I found these on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.../dp/B00004SD2O/ Fatal flaw on this one if the listing is correct - no "Cool blues". The Proper box I noted above has "Cool Blues" - see disc 3: Is there anything missing from this box that is essential?

I guess I'm just impressed by the effort. I'm holding a complete story, a slice of history. I own Mosaic's Complete HRS Sessions for the same reasons. There's a lot of music on that box that leaves me cold, too.

Just as I predicted. On the release date (today), Amazon's price is $123.85 but they're out of stock. However, Marketplace reseller "Germany" (which I believe is actually Membran) has it for $39.30. I bit, even though, if history's any indication, the price just might drop further than that going forward. Amazon resellers I received my copy today. At first glance, I'm very impressed by the packaging and presentation. Box arrived in perfect condition.

I listen to all my music via shuffle, and much of it without a visual - when I'm at my computer, I can see the track and cover in iTunes, when I'm in the car I can see track title and artist only, and in the shower it's only the music. I'm getting good at identifying lead musicians (this morning correctly identifying Charlie Hunter by his sound) and even which album the track is from (hearing a pianist that could be Tatum with a vibes player who isn't complicated or ornate and drums and perhaps no bassist led me to identify the Tatum - Hampton - Rich album). It's fun identifying alto saxists: Sonny Criss vs Art Pepper vs Lee Konitz for example, or realizing that the instrument that sounds higher than Konitz's alto is actually Warne Marsh's tenor. I also like listening to music I can't immediately identify, because it leads me to listen to the music more, and decide if (and why) I like it.

Same here. My favorite album was his second one. After that, well... the charm just eluded me. One big problem is with his melodies - pretty primitive, don't really go anywhere.
-
I really like "The Paul Bley Quartet" (catchy title, huh?) on ECM, with Surman, Frisell and Motian.
-
John Lewis, though some might say he leans towards the simplistic rather than the simple. Sonny Clark, Grant Green, Horace Parlan, Kenny Dorham, George Lewis (trombone) come to mind.

I was reminded of this thread this morning while listening to this:

Moderator, can this thread be moved to the Boxed Set forum? That's where I'd think to look for it. TIA.

Just earlier today, I was listening to that Art Farmer Quartet, but with Steve Swallow on bass ("Interaction"). It was recorded July 1963; I wonder if that was before or after Ron's anecdote?
