AB - My "Blows" is a 1987 mastering - "ancient" in CD years. Don't have a CD of "Sunfighter". While we're on it, "Baron Von Tollbooth" isn't all bad, either. Technically it's a Kantner/Slick/Freiberg album, not the Starship - but then again, neither is "Sunfighter" (Kantner/Slick).

Went on a Dashiell Hammett walking tour of SF today. I had done the same one over 20 years ago and the same guy is doing it. Pretty entertaining and definitely a workout. It's over 4 hours and plenty of hills, too. One of the highlights is a visit to one of Hammett's apartments, which also happens to be the same as Sam Spade's apartment in Maltese Falcon. The guy is a character and you get plenty of personal asides as well as info about other authors and general SF history. It's only $10, and you DEFINITELY get your money's worth. I'm a little biased because this is one of my all-time favorite rock bands. I got all of the new remasters except for "Takes Off". They all sound great and it's nice to have the extra tracks. The additional stuff is pretty much collector's quality music, though. The best of the bunch is an unlabeled piece at the end of "Baxters" - an instrumental version of "Young Girl Sunday Blues". It comes in at about 2:40 of track #15. I was always a huge fan of "Blows", also. I didn't realize that there are remasters of that and "Sunfighter", too. I would definitely pick them up, if they are any good. I'm not sure why "Volunteers" hasn't been remastered yet. Maybe that's an upcoming release.

Don't miss out on that live Television set! If you like that band at all, it's a great recording and a great performance.

FYI - They're BACK!

It's probably the same (or better) quality as bootlegs of the same music already on the market. I think this was released in order for the band to get some royalties. Zappa did the same thing in the 80's.

Wow. Blue Mitchell has only been OOP for mere WEEKS and it just sold for $105.25.

It's pretty funny. Hard to believe it's real.........but it IS!

If you like Johnny Hartman, the first half of this album is arranged by Gerald Wilson and it really smokes. The second half is by Oliver Nelson which isn't bad, either (yet Gerald edges him out in this set)

Very bizarre that the whole "suite" of sites is down. Must be a REAL drag for Mosaic/True Blue as I expect they get a lot of their business through the web. Hope it's back up soon!

Thanks for the suggestion, Pete. I'm leaning towards the Mingus Big Band, though. It seems like something that should be seen on their "home field" and it's not that easy to see them otherwise.

That's pretty much it, Tom, with the addition of Arthur Webb (on flute) sprinkled throughout the album.

What everybody else said. I think this album is going to get him some recognition.......FINALLY. It seems like there's a lot of "buzz" about it. I don't have it yet myself, but the couple of tracks that I heard on KCSM sounded great. I've been a big fan since I first heard him on the Harlem Bush Music albums. I like the Horace Silver "United States of Mind" sets (due out as Conns later this year, BTW) as well as Stan Clarke's first - "Children of Forever" - also featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater. Look for him on the title track of Duke Pearson's "I Don't Care Who Knows It", too.

Anyone notice the extra track on disk #1 of Byrd's "Half Note" set? The liner show 7 tracks (including the intro), but there are 8 on the CD. Later ... I just realized that it's a different version of "Pure D. Funk" - track #6 on disk 1.

Oh........Bacar. Yeah, it's still there. I think it's on Brannan. It's a restaurant, really. I ate there a couple of weeks ago. Really expensive.

Bruno's is still going. Haven't heard about that place on 4th Street.

I think I heard once that the Andrew Hill was not a bit seller. I thought the same for Larry Young, too. While both of these are big favorites here (and on ebay!), they don't make many ripples with the general public.

Whoa! That Fuller set sold for $200!!! Now THAT'S nuts! Also, Thad Jones went for $150! When someone recently mentioned that they grabbed one for around $75, I thought that was a little high at the time. Some serious inflation on those sets lately.
