  1. They are different films, but I liked them both. I don't know why the new one was not well received. Too cerebral, no doubt.
  2. Ask and ye shall receive. Whoa! That makes at least 50% of this thread completely non-sensical.
  3. I was discovering jazz in the 70's, too (17-27 for me). Some of my first albums were Freddie's "Red Clay" (still great), Charles Lloyd's "Wave" (sounding dated these days), Don Ellis "At Fillmore" (where's THIS reissue?) and "Live/Evil" ('nuff said). Joanne Brackeen's "Keyed In" is a nice TZ album, as well - Eddie Gomez/Jack DeJohnette. Good call FreeForAll on the big band stuff. I saw a Woody/Maynard double bill as well as Don Ellis' BB. I wish I had a better memory of those shows. ... and another for the Sons of Champlin!
  4. - Let's not forget Joe Henderson, either. "In Japan" and "Relaxin' at Camarillo" aren't all bad. - Another Sarah Vaughan - "How Long Has This Been Going On" - Inner City record label. Some of their own stuff and they also licensed Steeplechase. - The Crusaders had some of their best years in the 70's. - Gary Bartz "Harlem Bush Music" albums and "I've Known Rivers" - McCoy Tyner was out of his mind in this decade.
  5. Great show. Better than Seinfeld in that it does not have a laugh track.
  6. Sure. There was tons of stuff. - Lots of Dexter. Besides "Tangerine", there was "Ca'Purange", "The Apartment", "Bouncing With Dex" and "Homecoming". - The first 2 "Return To Forever" albums. Also, "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" was a pretty good fusion effort, I thought. - "Inner Mounting Flame" has to be mentioned. - The emergence of ECM Records. - Max Roach's quartet with Billy Harper and Cecil Bridgewater. - Mingus - both "Changes" albums and "Mingus Moves". - Cedar Walton's "Eastern Rebellion" group(s). ... well, that's for starters anyway.
  7. BTW, the new Blackhawk box just gets better and better with each listening. Another astonishing "complete" set of mostly previously unissued material.
  8. I couldn't say. I usually just close my eyes and pull one out. They're ALL good!
  9. What's weird is that they sell the "remastered" original set for $27.98.
  10. Basically, what JazzDog said. I was not impressed the first time around, either. Shut the fuck up, Donnie!!!
  11. Speaking of Tim Hardin - "Bird on a Wire" - Joe Zawinul - Sam Brown - Ralph Towner - Glen Moore - Miroslav Vitous - Al Mouzon - Mike Manieri - Colin Wolcott I have this album, but not knowing it that well, it certainly appears that there are one or more cuts each with [early] Weather Report and Oregon.
  12. Tony Williams, Ernie Watts, John Klemmer, Larry Carlton & Milt Holland, among others.
  13. Terry Gross (of Fresh Air on NPR) replayed an interview she did with him in '97 this afternoon. A very interesting guy. Quite a character, aside from what he did. Did you know that he was a big fan of John Phillip Sousa? Did you know that he played the tuba, sousaphone and drums?
  14. I would have voted for the 65-68 set, but the Plugged Nickel box is such a rare opportunity to hear a band (and not just ANY band) over the course of a week, I just had to go with that one. Oddly enough, the Miles/Gil box is the only one on this list that I don't have. I was never a fan of "Sketches" and this particular side of Miles' music doesn't do a lot for me.

What Cali said. Right down to owning the LP since the 70's. Great album. I don't know why it took Fantasy/Milestone so long to release the CD. FYI EMusic members - you can d/l it there. BTW, why don't they release the "Harlem Bush Music" sets - "Taifa" and "Uhuru"? It's only available as an import now.
  16. Never heard of it, but it looks like a "boot" to me.
  17. "Gypsy Folk Tales" on Roulette is one that you don't hear a lot about. It's got some really great tunes and the lineup of Dennis Irwin, Dave Schnitter, Bobby Watson, Walter Davis and Valeri Ponomarev is as tight as you will ever hear. Don't know its availability, but if you see it - get it!
  18. ... but seriously, we do the same as Rooster. NPR so we can wake up to Bob Edwards, Scott Simon or Leanne Hansen.
  19. There are the two BN Elvin albums "Puttin' It Together" and "The Ultimate" with just Joe Farrell and Jimmy Garrison. Both in the Mosaic box, I believe.
  20. I wonder why "Changes One" and "Changes Two" haven't been released in a single set? Re-mastered, additional tracks, expanded liners - what's the hang up? This IS classic stuff!
  21. The Byrd/Adams will be one of my next purchases, for sure. Good choice.
  22. What was great was that George, Don Pullen and Dannie Richmond continued the legacy of this group with their own George Adams/Don Pullen Quartet.
