  1. Been listening to Plant's Digging Deep podcast lately and his discussion about this album (and "Monkey" in particular) was pretty interesting. The whole series is worth a listen, actually.
  2. Wow - THAT'S something!
  3. 1,000% My favorite set of the year ... or MORE I went to his guitar camp at the Fur Peace Ranch in southern Ohio a couple of times. Fun experience and great to hang with him and Jack and whoever else is teaching that weekend. But it's not cheap, and getting there from SF is challenging. As much as i enjoyed it, I realized I could learn a lot more and for much less money here in SF. Still ... I might go again one of these days
  4. I picked up the Tolliver CD earlier this year from Mosaic. You might want to check their site.
  5. Pretty much agree here ... unfortunately. Two-three disks max would have been reasonable. Yep. I picked that up when it was released and hated it at first - sloppy! But the more I listened the better it seemed, especially the energy of the times. It's not Bless It's Pointed Little Head (one of the best live albums of its day), but a reasonable companion piece. FWIW, I had an opportunity to hang out with Jorma several years ago and asked him what he thought about Pointed Little Head and he said it was some if his favorite Airplane music.

    Frank Zappa

I pretty much agree with this assessment. I don't have a problem with releasing this material, I just don't find it very interesting.
  7. I've always been a huge FZ fan and was planning on buying it. But I streamed it first and was very underwhelmed. Some interesting stuff for sure, but overall too many re-starts, rehearsal noodling and studio chatter to make it an enjoyable listening experience. I'm sure many will disagree.
  8. Hank Mobley "A Slice of the Top" EMI Japan CD
  9. Thanks for the reminder! I've had that since it came out, but never listened to it much.

    Frank Zappa

I listened to quite a bit of this on Amazon Music and it's hugely disappointing. The repetitive raw and alt-takes plus the spare studio chatter throughout is not something I would listen to more than once. Definitely not worth the price unless you happen to be a FZ completist. I'm sure Frank would be very unhappy that this set was released.
  11. Rev Gary Davis was a big influence on Jorma Kaukonen. You can really hear it in his acoustic music.
  12. Nice shots!
  13. Is this the box you're talking about?
  14. This is an album I always meant to get. Never did.
  15. Haven't pulled that out in a while. Forgot how good it was.
  16. I've heard great things about the Kimball. Would like to go there someday. "Soul of a Nation, Art in the Age of Black Power" is now in SF at the DeYoung. I missed it in London a couple of years ago. Really want to see it now.
  17. Agreed. Anyone interested in the Monterey Festival should have the box.
  18. Wow ... Me neither!
