  1. Are English translations of the original liner notes included?
  2. My wonder pertains to marketing/sales of the music in CD format (perhaps by JLH) compared with Eremite's vinyl only approach.
  3. Sure... i'll rush right out and get a turntable (and arm, and cartridge, and interconnect, and phono pre-amp, and record cleaning machine, and nice wide shelf ... ). : ) Eremite has evidently not sold all of the 600 copies of this vinyl edition. I wonder what JLH could have done (might do?) with this music?
  4. I've bought and sold several items on audiogon over a period of years- not in the last two years, though. At the time, i knew the market pretty well, jumped on pieces that were well described and at a good price when from sellers with uniformly positive feedback, and carefully described and priced pieces i no longer needed. Never found phone communication necessary, but would have provided a phone number, or telephoned, if so requested by what sounded like a serious buyer. Never had any problem.
  5. Thank you for the news, and big thanks to BfB for leading the effort to develop this resource. My guess is that it will help Blue Note's bottom line. That is because i find that the quantity of my music purchases has tracked my increasing knowledge and appreciation of the catalog.
  6. Great record Does Spotify have the new remasters? Yes it has the whole series, all 56 titles. None of the titles are available on my U.S.A. account.
  7. Schedule here... I haven't been able to find how to obtain tickets to the McPhee/Vandermark performance, 8/31, at Ganz Hall (Roosevelt U.). Anyone here know?
  8. LuxuriaMusic.com (BYE BYE BLUES by DICK HYMAN AND MARY MAYO at this moment) Groovy, baby...
  9. . 17 sets (all releases to date?) are on sale until 7/31 at importcds.com. $22- $29! Searching (using the advanced search) 'Label/Studio/Mfg:' for 'soul note' brings them up. Reader, i married them. .
  10. Getting familiar with Spotify i stumbled on to 'Graceland' (25th anniversary). I could tell through $10 earbuds that this is an astonishing album. I want to hear the uncompressed CD on my main system, so... i ordered it from Amazon. Almost certainly i would never have bought it otherwise as i only browse jazz and classical music at (on-line and b&m) retailers.
  11. PM sent RE: 3 Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers (BN RVG) 15 Joe McPhee Tenor & Fallen Angels (hatOlogy 544) thin digipack version
  12. . Discount code "facebook10" brought the total (including shipping) down to $250. Happy birthday to me! Thanks, jazzbo.
  13. I haven't been buying music the past couple of years and am curious how you advise one who wants the Complete Miles Columbia box. Does $338 (Amazon.com) seem O.K., or does it regularly appear for something significantly less (say, $275, or so)? Very happy to be getting re-acquainted with this amazing forum after a two year hiatus... Rupe
  14. . Something other than pleasant Hawaiian-type/sunset-viewing music perhaps? rupe

    Squeezebox

I have three squeezeboxes in my home. One in the office and one in each of two bedrooms. The squeezebox is a wonderful device that allows for playing of music stored on one's hard-drive, and for playing music streams from on-line radio stations and music services. The squeezebox is about convenience. It can't hold a candle to the modified Esoteric DV50S multi-purpose digital player in my main music system. Likewise, downloaded compressed audio files are no substitute for well mastered CDs of well recorded music. There is increasing availability of high resolution audio files for downloading and these can be the source of very high quality audio playback, but, IMO, not through a squeezebox or squeezebox/DAC combination.
  16. I use Boltz racks. They are efficient, sturdy, stable, attractive, and relatively reasonably priced. http://www.boltz.com/cd-storage-racks.html

  18. . I've not been entirely happy with the single CD 1997 Legacy edition. Is the remastering of the 50th anniversary 2-CD edition different than that one?
  19. Chicago Jazz Festival 2009: Tuning in novel sounds Howard Reich MY KIND OF JAZZ May 19, 2009 Several of the most storied innovators in jazz will headline the 31st annual Chicago Jazz Festival, running Sept. 4-6 in Grant Park. Though the fest long has presented adventurous artists at the Petrillo Music Shell, the iconoclasts nearly will dominate this year. Pianist-bandleader Muhal Richard Abrams will serve as artist in residence, leading a trio Sept. 4 and a big band Sept. 6. In addition, brilliant Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba will front a quintet Sept. 4; Chicago jazz titan Fred Anderson will lead an "80th Birthday Jam," setting the stage for bassist-bandleader William Parker examining music of Curtis Mayfield and the Dave Holland Big Band, Sept. 5; and the Archie Shepp Quartet performs Sept. 6. "This year, maybe more than other years, we are saluting the innovators of the music, for which Chicago has become world renowned," said Lauren Deutsch, executive director of the non-profit Jazz Institute of Chicago, which programs the event. "We're also pleased to announce the addition of a new stage that will be featuring young musicians." Details to come soon. Technically, the festival shrinks to three days, from four. But, as in the past, a Chicago Jazz Festival Week will offer several evenings of music, with the Jazz Institute's fundraiser concert Sept. 1; the annual Club Tour, Sept. 2; and a "Benny Goodman Centennial Celebration" concert in Millennium Park featuring Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Sept. 3. Following is the complete lineup. The event is produced by the Mayor's Office of Special Events, with all stages near Columbus Drive and Jackson Boulevard. Sept. 4Jazz on Jackson Stage, starting at noon: Ernie Adams Trio with Richie Cole; Fareed Haque and the Flat Earth Ensemble; Jason Adasiewicz Quintet; Esperanza Spalding. Jazz & Heritage Stage, 12:30 p.m.: Dudley Owens Quintet; Diane Delin; Bob Seeley and Bob Baldori. Petrillo Music Shell, 5 p.m.: Jeff Parker Quartet; Muhal Richard Abrams Trio; Madeleine Peyroux; Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet. 22. . I have no reason to doubt that what you say is legally the case (at least in this country, and at this time). My question, however, was about ethics. Whatever I want? I find that a quite unfair (between the lines) reading of what I wrote. Anyway... I will give the matter some more thought as I do find the problem I posed one worth pondering. I don't anticipate making any move to acquire a copy of 'Big Chief'. Perhaps one day I'll get to hear it on the radio, or in someone else's home. And if neither one of those opportunities should come up, I would be the poorer for that. I do wonder in what sense, if any, the musicians on the record might not also be the poorer should I and others ready and eager to give them a sympathetic hearing never get the chance? Rupe P.S. FWIW, I have only one CDR in my library- an authorized (I think) copy of Hum Dono sold by Downtown Music Gallery.
