Manners, young man. Nobody will thing you are cheating with two mallets. Stephon Harris uses two. When Joe Locke ( who is a two mallet master ) plays ( always four mallets) he mainly plays lines with the two inside mallets. Because of his huge harmonic facility, four are used often for chords. That works for him, for others, it's different. Check out these videos of Joe for a look: Joe Locke / Christo Rafaledis Vibes/Marimba Duo - Van Gogh By Numbers
  3. Andy McGhee, sax; Raoul Romero, sax; I don't have that one, but does it really say Raoul? That hasd to be the origional road rat: Joe Romano.

  5. Well Clem, this one is great. Give it a listen.
  6. Tough Crowd! (just like Ron Carter) This is a good one: Stay away from Mr. Bow Tie! I have a friend who hired him for his trio record. Ron refused a rehearsal and when my friend wanted to do a second take of the first song they played, Ron said "No, I don't do second takes"... and that was that. The record came out fine, though. I have another friend who toured and recorded with him. He complained that the music lacked a certain, let's say, visceral intensity. He was treated and compensated very well though.
  7. I have this on LP. It's always been a favorite.
  8. Ron's his own person, as they say. I once read a interview that he gave to the University of Rochester's campus magazine. The Eastman School of Music, where Ron studied in the late 50's (1955–59), is part of the U of R. The interviewer asked " You must have find memories of your time at Eastman ( where I believe Ron was the only Black student ) ? Ron lambasted him with ( in effect) "What gives you that idea? How could I possilbly have fond memories? I was a only Black student with a young family to support, in a hostile enviorment. It was made clear that I had no real opportunities in the Eastman world. The audacity of that statement shows you have no real respect for me or understanding of my musical life" etc. etc. He was correct, of course, but Ron takes to prisoners!
  9. Exactly! I have nothing against Scott Hamilton, but for all his talent, his was a comfortable solo, and the pleasure one gets is the pleasure of relaxing with pipe and slippers as the family dog brings the newspaper in his mouth. Wayne's solo, even if he can do this stuff reflexively by now, is more about rearranging the furniture and training the dog to do weird shit. I take issue with the notion that Hamilton doesn't have his own style. He is as much a of sax stylist within the swing idiom as Shorter is within the post-bop idiom. Every player has his own "style" when they put a horn in their mouth, but Wayne's is original and influential. Wayne's "style" is it's own planet! Hey, I own a couple of Hamilton sides! He's best with a ballad, to me.
  10. Early in Scott Hamilton's career, just out of Providence, I saw him quite often and he can play the horn in that older style. At the time it was unique to hear a young man play that way without any evidence of post bebop influences. Some people said he played like Hawkins, but I never heard any of that it in his playing. Wayne, of course, is playing in a older style now too. The difference is that it's his own style! Only the Japanese would put together a concert like this and be serious about it, God love them.
