  1. not true - Armstrong is commercial, The Beatles are commercial. James Brown is commercial, Hell, even Beethoven is commercial these days. The Lovin Spoonful was commercial. The Velvets were commercial. Patty Smith is commercial (well, she sucks). Miles was commercial. Mamie Smith was commercial. Bessie Smith was commercial. Basie was commercial. Ibuprofen is commercial. Cheeseburgers are commercial. but I like (almost) all of the above.
  2. First time I went to the Monterey Jazz Festival I saw Patty Waters (as well as another favorite of mine, Bobbe Norris). Patty's sound was so brutally honest and vulnerable, I was on the edge of my seat. I had known the ESP recordings, but this was more profound. I also noticed how much she got from Ethel Waters, and when I spoke with her she confirmed this. A few years later I got to see her reunited with Burton Greene at the Vision Festival. I saw a Hendricks & Ross reunion at the Blue Note in 1999. The pianist, David (whose last name I can't remember), had been a classmate of mine in an abnormal psych class at Brooklyn College ca. 1974, but that was the only time I saw him gigging, and haven't heard of him since.
  3. Pretty close to mine, though I would want to put Patty Waters and Annie Ross in there too somehow.
  4. The Louvin Brothers Patty Loveless Lyle Lovett
  5. General Field Marshall Cinque Patty Hearst Orson Welles
  6. Pope Innocent I Guilty Party Patty Boyd
  7. Out of the Past (John Hendricks) Out of Nowhere (Coleman Hawkins) Get out of Town (Patty McGovern) I Told Ya I Love Ya Now Get Out (Stan Kenton) I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart (Duke) next Ashes
  8. About a month before the company went live here, somebody made sure that the "secret menu" business was included in all the print stories that were hitting the presses. Five Guys opened up here over a year ago, and they're good, but I'm more of a single half-pound patty cooked medium rare (at most!) and served on an artisan-type bun guy, so...I like them, but really...I can get better at home.
  9. Duke Ellington (so far it's only 77 years of Solitude) Duke (the bloodhound from Beverly Hillbillies) Patty Duke
  10. Exactly Like You (the Fields-McHugh song) Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Nine Inch Nails) That's Exactly What I Mean (Patty Loveless) Exactly What You Wanted (Helmet) Exactly Where I'm At (Ween) next: EVERYONE/EVERYBODY (was it already done?)
  11. Vanilla Ice Chocolate Thunder Peppermint Patty
  12. Yellow dye in the pickles. Yellow dye in the cheese. Probably in the "butter" too, which most likely isn't real butter. Has the patty been bleached with ammonia like other fast-food hamburgers (in order to protect against ecoli and salmonella)? Yum! Fast food is gross. On our last long road trip, which was mostly in the Great Plains, I was so sick of fast food I actually didn't eat all day until we had dinner at the venue each night. In states like Nebraska, Iowa, etc. there is literally nothing else to eat on the road unless you have time to sit down for 1 to 2 hours and get a real meal. Nothing even decent like a Panera. It was hell. I'll never eat at Wendy's again; that stuff is nasty.
  13. crazy man, they call me----- an old old old worn out record friend... we've been through a lot together we've been lots of places more than our share of good times; far less than our share of bad times............ PATTY!!!!!
  14. This week's Damages. Patty was in dazzling form, it's turned into a real battle against evil.
  15. Correct, Jim! I learned last night that he was the President of the Screen Actors Guild thirty years ago, preceding Ed Asner. Patty Duke's dad on the Patty Duke Show and the English teacher, Mr. Pomfritt, on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. At age 89, he's still working. Most recently on the HBO series True Blood. Probably one of the busiest actors in the history of television.
  16. Franklin Mint Ferdinand La Menthe Peppermint Patty
  17. P,P. Badleigh Pee Pie Patty & The Pot Pie Plenty Poddy Pahpah
  18. Conn Smythe Patty Smyth John McEnroe A V Roe R J Mitchell Olivia de Havilland
  19. Conn Smythe Patty Smyth John McEnroe
  20. Patty Duke Teddy Bunn Hamilton Burger
  21. He had others, as well, from what I'm told (by Bernard, but on this I trust him). Yoko was very into Patty Waters, of course.
  22. Suoni is over, outstanding year, of the 8 concerts attended 7 of them fall into the good to fantastic category. If I had to do a podium it would go like this 1 Farmers by Nature 2 Satoko Fujii Ma-Do 3 Atomic Big jazz fest started yesterday with suprise suprise no jazz among the concerts. Saw Robert Plant's Band of Joy, very enjoyable, Plant has not much of a voice anymore but he showed some energy plus Patty Griffin was as good as you can find as a backup singer. Buddy Miller showed his stuff. Plant was overshadowed by Prince who decided to do an inpromptu concert for two nights at the Metropolis, unfortunately tickets were out of my price range. Along the lines of 170 $ for a single ticket, heck I bought for 8 gigs at the Suoni for a similar price. Tonight true jazz starts with David Binney, Marc Ribot's Ceramic dog and Brad Mehldau in solo at the beautiful Gésu venue
  23. Wednesday saw Full Blast a Peter Brotzmann led formation with a heavy metal rhythm section, not so great a lot better was The Thing who brought along Joe MCPhee with them Thursday saw Atomic starring Paal Nilssen-Love on drums, another outstanding evening Tonight was in a different universe as I saw Band of Joy with Robert Plant, great band with Buddy miller and Patty Griffin among others Tomorrow big day as the big jazz fest really starts with multiple concerts to attend. Wish I could have seen Prince tonight but with tickets at 150 $ minimum , it's way out of my price range.
