king ubu Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Conrad Silvert Presents Jazz at the Opera House (Columbia). A 1982 two-LP set drawn from a concert in San Francisco. I bought this back in the day, but haven't listened to any of it for awhile, and I'm surprised at how good most of it is. On hand are Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Haden, and Tony Williams, among others. There's some great music here, and your comments about Crouch are interesting in light of the excellence of young Wynton M.'s playing here. If Crouch hadn't decided that that Marsalis was The Savior of Jazz, would his music developed differently? It's also interesting that the group shot on one of the inner sleeves pictures several musicians who don't appear on the album, like Pat Metheny and Carlos Santana. Jaco Pastorius is in the picture; he's not listed among the personnel, but he's on "Footprints," and even has a solo. Guess I'll grab that one then, if it's still around at the used bookstore nearby! The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Today's vinyl, so far Jack McDuff - Tough Duff - Prestige (purple label) Les McCann - The longer you wait - JAM None of you lot ever seem to play JAM LPs MG Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 No idea how "authentic" this is, or how "good" it's supposed to be by any established critical standards, but I'm pretty much digging the shit out of it! The only time I'm explicitly aware of Buddy Rich's presence is when he plays snare drum, and he does not play all that much snare drum on this record. Which is to say that he creates neither clash nor discord in a setting where it would be really easy to do so. The guy just sits down and plays the music, and let that be a lesson to us all. Besides, in a post-Bollywood world...I don't know what this would have sounded like any kind of listener in a pre-Bollywood world, I'll put it that way. Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Bebop? More like WHEEEEEE-Bop! I love this band like none other. Between this and the Salle Pleyel concert...that's it right there. Don't get no better, ain't gonna get no better. Not for this. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Johnny Hammond Smith - Higher ground - Kudu Some of my favourite Joe Henderson on this. And what an idea to have Joe and Hank Crawford on one album! MG Quote

JSngry Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Don't know about that, but any Album Covers With Sexy Mouths (Or Lips) tread that doesn't start of with this cover is not getting of to a good start! Which gives me an idea.... Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 (early?) 70s era United Artists pressing, classic style label, mono. it sounds fantastic. net savings over original: 1230 dollars. *my price: 18 i kind of regret passing on the hank quintet one i saw now. i mean they sound fine. its a 1000% analog transfer. the only thing is, did they really pull out the master for these. who knows. maybe the master was copied, then it was cut. either way, the actual master *had* to be consulted in this. this was the 1st reissue of the album, right? theres no pre U/A issues of this on Libery were there? brownie Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 Martial Solal 'Sans Tambour ni Trompette' (RCA France) Splendid album that was mentioned by (Simon8) in the Overlooked/Ignored/Neglected thread. My copy has been autographed by Martial Solal (signing barely visible in the top left of the front cover) for a ladyfriend who sold an impressive collection of signed Solal LPs a few years ago at a fleamarket! I managed to score several of them! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 Just finishing: Gene Ammons - The Soulful Moods Of Gene Ammons. Van Gelder in the deadwax. Nice date. jeffcrom Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow (Nessa) A truly magical album. As a young man searching for my own music, I listened to this one over and over again, trying to unlock its secrets. I hadn't spun it for awhile, but it was calling to me tonight. It's as beautiful as ever - thanks for releasing it in the U.S., Chuck. My copy has the even less readable yellow-on-white cover. Quote
