John Tapscott Posted July 1, 2015 Report Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) Bought this on the recent shipping sale. Just finishing up Disc 7. Amazingly good music. Arguably the best Mosaic set I own (and I have some dandies). Edited July 1, 2015 by John Tapscott Quote
mjzee Posted July 3, 2015 Report Posted July 3, 2015 I've started listening to the Sidney Bechet BN set on LP I recently picked up on Ebay. I thought the LP length was nicely suited to the music - 6 tracks on a side was just perfect (though I had to get up to turn the disc over). Great music, nice sound. I had most of this material on other releases, but this allowed me to appreciate the music anew. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 5, 2015 Report Posted July 5, 2015 Bob Whitlock's passing made me pull the Mulligan-Baker Mosaic - those LPs are plain flat and noise-free. Quote
xybert Posted July 6, 2015 Report Posted July 6, 2015 Have been immersed in the Ellington small groups set over the last couple of days: discs 1-5 on Sunday, discs 6 and 7 Monday night. Majorly enjoyable. Quote
TedR Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 Roy Eldridge Verve Studio sessions, disc 5 with Benny Carter. Some of my favorite Benny Carter......and RE responds......and/or vice versa. Either way, this is a classic session. Quote
Clunky Posted July 11, 2015 Report Posted July 11, 2015 Curtis Fuller - disc 1 not played this in years, it's just fantastic music. The Mosaic sounds terrific. Quote

mikeweil Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 Yesterday it was single discs from the Beiderbecke/Trumbauer/Teagarden, Lionel Hampton Victor, and H.R.S. Sessions boxes. Quote
TedR Posted July 13, 2015 Report Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) Roy Eldridge Mosaic, disc 6, the Dixieland session. I'll play the other discs (haven't listened to disc 7 yet) more than this maybe. But they sure are having fun and for a studio recording to have this much energy (some over the top drumming and all) is pretty unique. Committed playing all around. I've gained a greater appreciation for Roy Eldridge because of this set. Edited July 16, 2015 by TedR Quote
Justin V Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 I picked this up last month. I'm about to listen to the half of the set with Stanley Cowell, Clint Houston and Clifford Barbaro. I enjoyed the tracks with Cowell, Cecil McBee, who is easily one of my favorite bassists, and Jimmy Hopps, whose playing I hadn't heard before. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 Complete Horace Parlan Blue Note set - LP7 ('Happy Frame of Mind' session). I'd forgotten just how good the sonics were on this set, helped by the 180g pressing weight. Lovely ! Quote

After hearing the Cowell/Houston/Barbaro tracks for the first time last night, I definitely agree. I actually picked it up without even knowing who was on it, so I'm glad that my blind faith was rewarded. For being a live collection, both bassists were recorded particularly well, which is a blessing given how strong McBee and Houston are. My only Tolliver-led date that I owned before picking up the Mosaic Select was With Love, so I think that I made a great decision in picking up this set.EDIT: I hope that that was a general FYI for the uninitiated and that I hadn't given the impression somehow that I didn't like the band with Cowell,Houston and Barbaro, which I was about to hear for the first time when I posted. Still some of my favorite music. Quote
