gmonahan Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Sarah Vaughn Disc 3... on random play.. Ironically this is making me want to listen to the Anita O'Day set more....(probably tomorrow on the way to work.... ) I've just not been able to get into Sassy... When she does a song straight... it's wonderful... but she was so prone to oversinging it.... (and winging it...) I know some of this board LOVE this set.... It's just got too many misses for me... and not enough hits.... It wasn't her best period, the Roulette stuff, but there are treasures in the set. She did better with Mercury, and I'm fond of her later Pablo stuff, especially the Ellington Song Books. Big Happy Birthday, by the way, to Michael Cuscuna, who turned 58 on Wednesday! Quote

ghost of miles Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 Disc 4 of the Dizzy Mosaic. I think--although I haven't listened to a great deal of Dizzy's post-1960s recordings--that this is my favorite period for DG's trumpet playing, and find myself turning to these sides more than the big band material (which I also enjoy a great deal). Larry Kart Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Bechet Select, Hodges small groups, Johnny Smith. My ship came in. Music is excellent (so what else is new?), but I was bit disappointed in the bland, relatively insight-free Hodges and Smith booklets, especially when compared to Bob Wilber's fine notes for the Bechet (or for that matter, Stanley Dance's fine biographical essay from the first Hodges Mosaic, which is reprinted in this one). I can't remember who wrote the Hodges notes, but I remember having the exact same reaction--surprised Mosaic went ahead & used them. I'm going to revisit all of that Hodges small-group material for radio next year, as it will be his centennary. Quote
