sidewinder Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 and of course Bill Evans and Gil Evans really were of (at least part) Welsh descent. It's an interesting theory that it added to the lyricism of their music, perhaps? Daffs are out in bloom in the front garden, even though a hurricane is blowing. Quote
BillF Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 (edited) A few years ago there was an item on Welsh television about why so many black American jazz musicians have Welsh surnames. I'm afraid the answer lies in the origins of slave owners and the naming of emancipated slaves. I went to a Max Roach gig in the late sixties when he harangued the English audience, making just this point about the English surnames of his musicians (Tolliver, Pope, Cowell and Merritt). street singer Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 (edited) I'm still working my way through the Hodges set. About halfway through it at this point, enjoying every minute of it. I'm trying to savor it a bit by enjoying it one session at a time...one disc every couple of days. Don't sleep on this set - if you don't have it, get it now! After this set I'll dive into the Venuti/Lang set. Have sampled some of the tracks from the first disc and am really looking forward to it... Edited March 1, 2008 by street singer Quote

Great stuff, but little time available recently to do any serious listening. Let me also add I really enjoy the Pepper Adams session. Love his contributions! Edited March 2, 2008 by Tom 1960 Quote

six string Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 I just finished listening to the first disc of the Don Pullen Mosaic Select. I had never heard any of his music afaik, but a friend of mine that I really respect highly recomended him, so I bought it today. Very exciting music to say the lease. More to come after I get better acquainted with it. Quote
WarpedOrb Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 (edited) Of all my Mosaics I seem to go to the J.J. Johnson one the most; Elvin Jones second. My new, and newly OOP, Hodges is quite good but offers no surprises. The Lang/Venuti set is not so good and I'm selling that one for beer money. Edited March 7, 2008 by DemonDuckOfDoom Quote
Tom 1960 Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Listening to the April 5 and August 14, 1958 sessions of Johnny Hodges Mosaic, disc 2. Great music. Quote
