Shrdlu Posted December 30, 2018 Report Posted December 30, 2018 I hesitated about the Oliver Nelson Mosaic set, but a re-playing of Stanley Turrentine's "Joyride" settled that. This is an outstanding collection, most of which I would probably never have heard on the separate albums. It was fantastic to have that pool of excellent studio musicians in that era: Danny Bank (which instruments do you want me to bring?), Ernie Royal, Phil Woods, Grady Tate, Jerry Dodgion, etc. Amazing. Lots of punchy brass, and those incredible woodwind tone colors. It doesn't get better than that. Add the Cannonball "Domination" session to the collection - a superb album. Quote

I remember being under whelmed by Grant Green's "Am I Blue" with Patton, which led me to ignore the Select when it came out. Glad my curiosity won. Quote

Shrdlu Posted January 2, 2019 Report Posted January 2, 2019 Ah, Gerald Wilson. Very good. I loved "The Feather", from his "Golden Sword" album. I haven't seen Bullwinkle in years. Used to love that show. Quote

Bluesnik Posted January 13, 2019 Report Posted January 13, 2019 And really enjoying it. Featuring nylon and steel strings and even a twelve string guitar on some sessions. With the great Clare Fischer or Les McCann. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 13, 2019 Report Posted January 13, 2019 I really dig Pass during the sixties - sharp attack, great groove. I never regretted getting the Mosaic box although I was on the fence for it for so long. Quote
