Rooster_Ties Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 (edited) OK, we know what the October Conns are going to be. And we know a dozen or more of the next RVG titles. But what are the next Rare Groove titles going to be?? And more importantly, what should they be?? Discuss... Also, my first suggestion would be for this... EDIT: I've already got the TOCJ of "Turning Point" - so my suggestion isn't cuz I'm lookin' for it. I just think it would be an excellent choice for a Rare Groove title, so more people can hear it. B) Edited May 25, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
undergroundagent Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I second that suggestion. I also think "On Broadway" by Reuben Wilson would be an excellent choice. I use to have the vinyl of this record. Nice groovy tracks! Quote
sidewinder Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Can't believe I passed on an original Liberty 'On Broadway' that time in Mole Jazz for about £10-£15 Good suggestion though. Maybe also Lonnie Smith's 'Think' is due for a re-mastering. That beaut has some nice Lee Morgan and Fathead Newman on it. Quote
Bluerein Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Who says there are going to be Rare Grooves at all this year???? Don't think so. But let's hope they can do a batch. Some Reuben Wilson would be great and some more Jack McDuff for sure. Cheers, Reinier Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Turning Point and On Broadway are both pretty good, if not quite great, albums--certainly deserving of an issue on domestic CD. There's also so pretty good McGriff (and maybe they could figure out who plays on the uncredited date(s)). Lou Donaldson's Say It Loud is at least as good as some of the stuff that's been reissued, and he has some completely unissued dates as well. Grant Green's Visions was his biggest seller (actually made the charts) and it's never been on a US CD. It's not Idle Moments, but Rudy did a great job of making his tone just glow and who wouldn't want to hear Grant play Mozart? It could be doubled up with a slightly earlier unissued studio session with Claude Bartee and Egregious Muhammad ("acid Green" or is it "Green Acid" is the lone original on that one). There's also a live GG date from the Club Mozambique with Houston Person and tunes he didn't do elsewhere. stanley T's Always Something There & Look of Love (both heavily orchestrated) woulkd probably fit on one CD. But I'd rather have the five 'little big band' dates from '67-68 that remain partially issued, sorry I don't have the BN discog with me but the material ranges from "Ain't No Mt. Hi enuff" to Jobim and most include McCoy and other notables with Duke P arrangments, i.e. the're interestingly transitional. Let's see, what else? I'm sure someone wants Blue Mitchell's Bantu Village and Collision In Black and they'd probably fit both on one CD. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 'Bantu Village' and 'Collision in Black'. Sounds like a good supplement to the Mosaic Quote
bertrand Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Larry Young's Contrasts and Heaven And Earth. Bertrand. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Oh, and I forgot the bobby Hutcherson session (1970?) where he plays current hits: unissued at the time but two tunes have been on UK samplers and the one I've heard ("Family Affair") was pretty good... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Yeah, I would love to see "Say it Loud" or "Cosmos"! Quote
undergroundagent Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 (edited) I wasn't really feeling "Cosmos" when I had the vinyl. It's actually not very groovy. I thought Sweet Poppa Lou was trying for something more straight ahead on this date. That said' "Say it Loud!" is a monster and deserves the reissues treatment. If Water wasn't reissuing the "Phantom," I'd also recommend that one. Edited May 25, 2004 by undergroundagent Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Grant Green's "Visions" would be great! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 Larry Young's Contrasts and Heaven And Earth. Hard to imagine these as Rare Groove titles. Both seem more like Conns to me, though I suppose "Heaven On Earth" (with George Benson) could maybe go either way. But (IMHO) there's no way "Contrasts" is ever gonna be a Rare Groove, seeing as how it has both Tyrone Washington and Herbert Morgan on the front line. Way to 'out' for the Rare Groove series. (Not to say that I wouldn't love to see them released. Man, hard to believe that after this October, that these will be the only two Larry Young BN sessions that haven't seen release as single discs. I still remember when "Unity" was all we had on CD.) Quote
jazzkrow Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 (edited) Another vote for Blue Mitchell's "Bantu Village" and "Collision in Black." I recently found Mitchell's 1977 ABC/Impulse lp, "African Violet." A bit weak (but not bad for a buck ($1)-at least it features some tracks with Harold Land! Still working on completing my pre-1975 Blue collection... I'll always have a soft spot for Mitchell, my first Mosaic purchase-many $ ago Edited May 26, 2004 by jazzkrow Quote
andybleaden Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 My votes would go for Set us Free and on Broadway by Reuben Wilson which I miss from LP days The other titles I would love to see that have already been issued would be Say it Loud by Lou Donaldson which I never got. I still think they could do with issuing Shades of Green. I really liked this and would love to have it again. Quote
mike casinghino Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 (edited) i e-mailed blue note about a grant green twofer with: visions shades of green the final comedown they replied that, "the grant green was promising". also, i still can't believe that the blue mitchell mosaic did not have: bantu village collision in black hopefully they will be issued at some point. though i still think the best chance would have been in the mosaic box. i would also love to see: reuben wilson-on broadway & set us free lou donaldson-say it loud jimmy mcgriff-black pearl also, almost forgot: the three sounds- soul symphony this (imo) would be a rare groove classic! Ed S Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I'm a big fan of the Rare Groove series and had begun to look at a release of Rare Grooves as a rite of summer for the past 3 or 4 years. Looks like they may not be doing a release this year though - too bad. All good suggestions above. I guess I'll have to be content with the Reuben Wilson that's coming out on Water (already have the Pearson on the Select) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 No 'inside' info to base this on, but I have a hunch we'll see some rare Grooves before the end of the year. For some reason, Rare Grooves don't get asked about as much (it seems), and the early, early, everly leaking of info about the Rare Goove titles doesn't seem to be nearly as frequent as it is with the Conns and RVG's (at least based on my experience). Soulstation1 Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 wasn't the last last rare grove - jbp- got a good thing goin'? was it the only rare groove released? ss1 Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 (edited) I thought there were six titles (can't find six, can only find four), so maybe it was just these four (from Jazzmatazz)... ================== Gary Bartz - Music Is My Sanctuary (Blue Note Rare Groove) Apr 22, 2003 Donald Byrd - Caricatures (Blue Note Rare Groove) Apr 22, 2003 John Patton - Got A Good Thing Going (Blue Note Rare Groove) Apr 22, 2003 Candido - Beautiful (Blue Note Rare Groove) Apr 22, 2003 ================== EDIT: FYI, there were five in 2002 (also from Jazzmatazz)... Eddie Henderson - Sunburst (Blue Note Rare Grooves) May 21, 2002 Richard "Groove" Holmes - Comin' On Home (Blue Note Rare Grooves) May 21, 2002 Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' (Blue Note Rare Grooves) May 21, 2002 Bobbi Humphrey - Satin Doll (Blue Note Rare Grooves) May 21, 2002 Jimmy McGriff - The Worm (Blue Note Rare Grooves) May 21, 2002 ================== Edited May 26, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Ed S Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Yep. only four last year - but there were a bunch of French releases that I picked up that would definitely be considered Rare Grooves. Nat Adderley's the Soul of the Bible, Ronnie Foster's Sweet Revival, Eddie Gale's Black Rhythm Happening, Gene Harris - Nexus, Alphonse Mouzon's Mind Transplant and Grant Green's the Final Comedown were the ones I ordered - but there were a whole bunch more. Add to that the summer release of those Latin Jazz albums and it was a kick-ass year for groovin' music. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 So, are we gonna get any Rare Grooves in 2005??? Quote
Swinging Swede Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 I would say no, because Say It Loud would have been an obvious candidate if more batches had been planned, but instead it was licensed to Water. My impression is that the later Rare Grooves sold badly and were rather quickly deleted. This type of material seems to come out on Water now instead. They are the new Rare Grooves. Quote
Bluerein Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Maybe if they (Water) can speed up the pace a little they truely can become the Rare Groove of the 21st century. Say at least 5 titles a year and they'll get the qualification (and seal of approval) from me! Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 dont you guys realize there never will be another rare groove series. blue note is way too stingy to do that now. get over it-- its not the late 90s any more. the blue note cd reissue rush is over Quote
