JSngry Posted July 27, 2018 Report Posted July 27, 2018 How did you like Quamon? The few times I've heard him (he's out of FW, and you know how that goes...), I've enjoyed what he had to say, or at least the way he says it. Who'd he have with him? Quote
kh1958 Posted July 27, 2018 Report Posted July 27, 2018 I heard the second set, which was quite good; just what I needed. He played tenor, alto and EWI, backed by piano/bass/drums, all unfamiliar to me. (The pianist's first name was Caleb; I don't recall the last/the others). I even like his EWI playing; he takes it seriously, not as a novelty instrument. He seems like a super-nice fellow, also. I hope they have him back, as the venue is really pleasant, with good sound; their usual acts are too much on the pop side for me to go very often. 8 minutes ago, JSngry said: How did you like Quamon? JSngry Posted July 27, 2018 Report Posted July 27, 2018 Yeah, he does seem to be a nice guy, serious about music but not angsty about it. I meat him through Paul Unger a few years back and was taken by how his playing was totally "inside", but not thoughtlessly so, I heard him any number of times do harmonic and rhythmic things that "colored outside the lines" in such a way that everybody (most importantly himself) could sense how he got there and why, and then when he got back in, it was never abrupt/arbitrary like "oh well, that's enough of THAT"; just a very thoughtful, real player. To use the hip-hop term, he had flow. Quote

Brad Posted August 26, 2018 Report Posted August 26, 2018 I just returned from a cruise on Norwegian and they had, surprisingly, a very nice jazz six piece band. On Thursday they did a program entitled A Tribute to Art Blakey, which was very nice. Another surprise was that it was very well attended.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get their names. Quote

We were at Capital Theatre last night and it was spectacular. Much better than in March. The younger guitarists are really stepping it up. Among many highlights, the shit-kicking version of Cumberland that followed Passenger at the beginning of the second set was one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted September 9, 2018 Report Posted September 9, 2018 saw Julian Priester quartet just now- he was lookin good- DAMN GOOD. played the whole show standing up, no chair anywhere, 10 yrs ago, he played sitting down.... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted September 9, 2018 Report Posted September 9, 2018 the audience and staff both could of been more respectful to julian. people shouting "turn it up"! staff calling on the talkbox down to julian no dont touch that mic to which julian shrugged, it was my only jazz show of the year i just wanted it to be perfect, but the band sounded good. in fact i dont think ive heard julian on mic like that before, with his own band. i knew he plays more quietly, but some of the audience started to freak out after the 1st number.  i couldnt believe what was going on. it was a 12 row theatre it wasnt exactly madison square garden, when thepeople said turn it up we cant hear u! julian said: " i think we have a protest"! Quote

Only saw Julian Priester on the one occasion, a Western Canada club date with a local trio. Vocalist Judi Singh joined for a few numbers. Great to hear that he is in good shape. Quote
