rachel Posted July 9, 2006 Report Posted July 9, 2006 organissimo w/ Arno Marsh at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. Midway thru their second set, and they're cookin'! They're doing 'Clap Yo' Hands, and the crowd is lovin' it! Conn, where are you! Quote
Allan Songer Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Keny Burrell tonight at Catalina's with Herman Riley on tenor (don't really know the rest of the quintet off the top of my head, but probably Roberto Miranda and Tom Ranier will be on hand as well). I've heard him 1-3 times a year for the past 20-25 years. And I'm still looking forward to tonight's show. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 Tuesdya, it was Lou Donaldson. Friday it was the Heath Brothers. Tonight, Lou Donaldson again. Quote

P.L.M Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 JASON MORAN TRIO, followed by WAYNE SHORTER QUARTET in few hours. Yesterday, it was ROBERT GLASPER TRIO (bouaf), KRIS DEFOORT QUARTET with MARK TURNER & JIM BLACK (very interesting) and JOHN ZORN'S MASADA, the true one, I mean the accoustic one (volatil and wonderfull, best concert I've ever seen from the quartet) Quote

Elissa Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Caught Dr Lonnie Smith at the Jazz Standard Tuesday, with the fine drummer Allison Miller. Peter wasn't on guitar, another young feller was but I missed his name. I love the Doc and my goodness does he ever swing. A wonderfully soul-expanding set he played too, not that that's extrordinary. In fact I can feel the new contours where he made my heart a bigger place. Quote
jlhoots Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 Saw an "all-star" group last night at The New Mexico Jazz Festival. Frank Wess, Lew Tabackin, Randy Sandke, Kenny Davern, Howard Alden, Cedar Walton, Peter Washington, Kenny Washington. Great playing by all. Everyone had their own "features" as well as tunes by the entire group. More thought than usually goes into this type of session had obviously been applied. Quote
sal Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 Tomorrow night is the Louis Hayes Quintet featuring Curtis Fuller, Ivan Taylor, Jon Batise and Maurice Brown!! Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 Pretty incredible circumstances tonight... At 5PM, I have another composition session with Karlheinz Stockhausen which will be followed by going to a concert in a Köln church with two of his daughters to see their brother, trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, play. If someone had told me 10 years ago that I'd be doing this, I wouldn't have believed them! Outstanding Rod! Please report about all the above. I can't believe there were no responses to your posting. JSngry Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 Yeah, me too. Amazing indeed, especially if Stockhausen's daughters are faboolus babes! Quote
jlhoots Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 Saw Branford Marsalis Quartet last night (Calderazzo, Revis, Tain). Have to say they were excellent. Quote
HolyStitt Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 Curtis Fuller Quintet at the Dakota tonight. It's weird that in this town this is billed as the Curtis Fuller Quintet, but in others it was billed as Louis Hayes Quintet. Quote

He cut out to play with the Legacy band. He was replaced with Kobe Watkins who filled in fantasticly (is that a word)....! Here are a few images from the show. Quote

It's weird that in this town this is billed as the Curtis Fuller Quintet, but in others it was billed as Louis Hayes Quintet. Taking turns!!! That was kind of my take, but I thought it should be billed as the Curtis Fuller-Louis Hayes Quintet. I had a real blast at the show. C.F. was off the stage for 2 or 3 numbers, but it was still a great time. They opened the 2nd set with Arabia. Through out the show Fuller was very talkative, sharing stories about many of the greats he played with. What was everyone's take on Maurice Brown? Quote
sal Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Nice pics, Mark! I was at the show, and I thought it killed! Maurice Brown was excellent, as was the young pianist. Quote
sheldonm Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Nice pics, Mark! I was at the show, and I thought it killed! Maurice Brown was excellent, as was the young pianist. I'm in agreement with Sal, Maurice Brown was very good! The piano player was 19 year old Jonathan Batise, part of the musical Batise family.....that kid's hands were huge! m~ Quote
HolyStitt Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 Mark, you are spoiling me with this photographs of people I have just seen or I am about to see! I really liked Maurice Brown. When they started Arabia, I was a little nervous for him because of the history of Hubbard playing on the song, but he really shined. I though Jonathan Batise was young, but didn't realize how young. He was a very nice piece to the group. Last night he had a feature with the trio playing "On Green Dolphin Street." Quote
