Late Posted December 27, 2025 Report Posted December 27, 2025 Carla Bley tribute/cover album. I'd never heard of Lluís Vidal. Check out Vidal's version of "Ida Lupino" in particular. Interesting spin. Quote
Niko Posted December 27, 2025 Report Posted December 27, 2025 Nothing to do with Bley, but Vidal is the pianist on one of my favorite albums, the sole quartet Album of guitarist Sean Levitt Quote

I'm going to listen to the whole album. Quote
Patrick Posted December 28, 2025 Report Posted December 28, 2025 I’m also a fan of a fairly recent CB tribute by Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, and Ted Nash. https://stevecardenas.bandcamp.com/album/healing-power-the-music-of-carla-bley Ben discusses it a bit here: Quote
T.D. Posted December 28, 2025 Report Posted December 28, 2025 Thanks. Reminds me in some ways of the tune (from her last recording?) you included in a recent BFT. I should get more familiar with the (both?) album(s). Quote
JSngry Posted December 28, 2025 Report Posted December 28, 2025 4 albums by that trio, this one-off chamber album, and some big-band albums. They all show her continued growth,as a composer. And if, like maybe a lot of people (myself included), you sorta stopped paying attention after a certain point, there are plenty of delightful examples that you were wrong for that. Very wrong. Love it when that happens! Quote

JSngry Posted December 28, 2025 Report Posted December 28, 2025 There was a long history with Bley/Mantler and Eicher. Their New Music Distribution Service provided ECM with their first real American outlet, and Eicher never forgot the favor. NMDS was a wonderful thing for so much music and musicians. Thanks - edit to add that their discussion on distribution was really interesting as it was true insider info. Quote
JSngry Posted December 28, 2025 Report Posted December 28, 2025 Hard to imagine it today, but ECM was really an "outsider" label in its earliest days. The availability that NMDS provided them was so crucial to their eventual success. Quote
T.D. Posted Sunday at 03:19 AM Report Posted Sunday at 03:19 AM Carla Bley's daughter has a show in this area next month. https://dice.fm/event/3o38g8-karen-mantler-trio-13th-feb-the-local-saugerties-tickets Quote
JSngry Posted Sunday at 04:30 AM Report Posted Sunday at 04:30 AM You mean Karen Mantler, right? I'd go see here, she's got her own thing going on, and has had for a while now. Quote

JSngry Posted Sunday at 06:33 AM Report Posted Sunday at 06:33 AM Again, I would definitely go see here. Quote
BFrank Posted Monday at 05:24 AM Report Posted Monday at 05:24 AM I would like to see her at Big Ears, but her time slot is pretty crowded with other artists I want to see. It will probably be a last-minute decision. Quote
