Jazz in Paris.

Just got "Nearness of You" and gave it a first spin last night. Nice one, far from essential though... (but I think in my book Grappelli in general rates as "far from essential", so...)

Ubu, did you go ahead and order it from amazon.fr? If not, where?

I like Grappelli, but I want it because I'm a hopeless fanatic about that series!

greg mo

Yes, but as a European (geographically spoken only... politically Switzerland is, well... somewhere remote up in the mountains, I guess), I often order there, it's a neighbouring country and their prizes often seem better than on amazon.de (which doesn't sell "Nearness of You" either, btw).

And yes, I'm crazy about this series, too - I have all the single discs (minus some that I have as part of box-sets or in other, better editions, i.e. the Pres, the Roach and "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud"), and the three previous "hors série" sets. I could not afford the four boxes when they were around cheap, alas... and I have none of the compilations (catalogue plus cd sampler, cd/remix + dvd package, plus belles chansons) that mostly re-packaged previously available material.

Yeah, for me in the U.S., it's a $10 S&H from amazon.fr, which is hard to swallow, so I'm waiting on it. I have all the singles and hors-serie 2-cd sets (except for the three brand new ones!) plus the sampler with the catalog. I haven't gotten any of the box sets, since they simply collect material from the singles. Way cool series--but you and I have talked about it before!

No. The Mosaic had EMI, not Universal, umbrella material.

JSP boxes of Django. . .that's another question. They encompass I think both the Mosaic and the JIP discs.

I think that's right. I remember being particularly pleased that the JiP's hadn't duplicated the Mosaic and vice-versa. Did Django record for any other labels (and yes, this is probably a pretty dumb question) that are represented on any other boxes, or do the JiPs and Mosaic pretty well cover it? Seems like there were some sessions he did in Britain that weren't on either one.

Yes, the JSP have 2 CDs worth ? of material from London (they are at work and I can't check right now). The last set called Django on the Radio also seems to be largely distinct from the JiP, although this may have some of the Belgian material as well. If you are looking for a single comprehensive source, then JSP is probably the way to go.

Thanks guys. And the Henri Crolla and Alain Jean-Marie? Has anybody heard them? I've heard some the earlier Crolla stuff which was great.

Heads up, esp. to Greg, that Dusty just got the Crolla in. I supposedly have one on hold, though this won't be official until morning. I wish the other 2 (and of course the Grappelli) were in, but it might be the following week. Price was definitely reasonable -- a few dollars less than Amazon actually.

As for sorting out Django, I guess this site here should be helpful:

http://www.gould68.freeserve.co.uk/django.htm

I have the Mosaic and all the JiPs, as well as a Definitive 4CD set that contains all (?) his recordings with American musicians. Not sure I need more...

But for those inclined to have it all, Fremeaux would be the way to go, not JSP or anything else, I guess. The Fremeaux series includes all there is, similar as their Armstrong series (but the Django sets are 2CDs only).

*&%$#@ it. The Crolla already sold out, and I didn't get one. At least they've started actually getting these in stock, and there should be more soon. Nonetheless, the tiny, tiny orders that Dusty gets in (5-10 copies at a time) may drive me to Amazon after all.

ARG! And I'm going to be on the road for the next week too. Well, I'll get 'em at some point.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, they just showed up at DG!! I was actually there kind of on a whim (since I didn't think they would release until tomorrow). So I snagged mine, and I think they have 4 or 5 more copies of each of the 3 sets. Still don't have that last Grappelli, but this will be awfully nice to listen to tonight.

The series lives on...

Three new double CDs out this week by the delightful Anachronic JazzBand, Henri Crolla and Alain Jean-Marie.

Many thanks! After a research at Amazon.fr I got the following titles for the Hors Serie JIP releases. Check the list that follows.

My problem is that, judging from the sleeves at Amazon, the Anachronic and Alain releases have the same 05 number, while there is no volume 04! Can you clarify this matter? Many thanks!

Problem is that there are different numbers on front/spine and then the back. I think most of us will go for the number on front and spine.

So Crolla becomes 04, Jean-Marie is 05 and Anachronic Jazz Band is 06.

Oops, Crolla may have 06 on the front, but I am pretty sure it does have 04 on the spine. I'll check again tonight.

It's really only a problem for the truly obsessed.

Ordered the Anachronic set, the Crolla, and the Jean-Alain Marie. I hope they all ship!

I just ordered all three as well. Keeping my fingers crossed!

ARG--I was too late. Out of stock again. God, but Dusty can be frustrating as hell. They could reserve some copies for at least a few days! And why don't they do back orders? GRRRRR!

Agreed, though in this case Amazon does have them for a bit more and free shipping if you got all of them. I was pretty surprised when I saw them on the shelves. The guy said they had literally come in two hours earlier.

So I've listened to the Anachronic Jazz Band, which is highly amusing, sort of along the lines of one of Mozart's music jokes. But I'm not steeped enough in Mozart's times to get most of his jokes (and just have to read about them) whereas this was genuinely funny to someone like me who knows bebop well and has at least a passing familiarity with trad. jazz.

As far as I can tell, the set has all of their first two LPs Open 02 and Open 09. The second disc is all live (including a couple of tracks cut in Germany!). It appears that roughly half of the live LP with Beryl Bryden is included as tracks 7-14 (and maybe track 19 from CD 1). Curiously, only one of the three tracks with Beryl is actually included: "Fattening Frogs." It appears 4 cuts from that LP are not included: "Running Wild", "Bonnie's Tune", "One Million Dollar Secret" and probably a live version of "Joy Spring." Well, it would have been nice to have everything, but this is a nice set.

Didn't really have a chance to listen to the Crolla yet.
