jazzbo Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 Hmmm. . . and I can honestly say that I like the stuff with Jack and Airto better than with Chancler and Mtume. To each their own! Quote
Soul Stream Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 ...actually, I was just teasin' a little bit Lon. . By the way, how's the new sound compared to the bootleg's? Quote
Guy Berger Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 i find jarrett's playing to be extremely funky in its own way. That gospel-infused funky sound is one of the standout characteristics of Jarrett's playing during this period. Guy Quote
jazzbo Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Mike, the boots sound really good. . . mellower and warmer a little bit than the new set which is clear as a bell and crisp in comparison. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Oh my god, this music is amazing. I can't get enough of it. Such bass, such a groove, such an ensemble. It's weird...I was never able to get into Live Evil, or the Fillmore sessions, or even (gasp) Bitches Brew, but after listening though the Cellar Door sessions, I brought those down off the shelf and...well, I get it. I don't know how or why, but I get it. I completely get how this isn't for everyone (although I'm straining to get "mediocre," but different strokes), but damn. TIGHT! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I mean, DAMN! Did any board members attend any of these sets? If so, what was it like? Quote
GregK Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I mean, DAMN! Did any board members attend any of these sets? If so, what was it like? good question! Anyone? Quote
Alexander Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 Got mine on my b-day (last week), but as I had something of a backlog of discs to listen to, I didn't get around to the first disc of this until this evening. I'm only on the second track of the first disc, but I have to say that it pleases me! Everyone sounds great (including Jarrett, on whom I tend to run hot and cold). The sound is much better than a good deal of the electric live material Miles released on Columbia. I look forward to hearing the rest of the set! I'll be dividing my listening between this and the Ray Charles box (I'm through the first two discs of that). After that, I have to get through "Goodbye, Babylon" and the "Fonotone" boxes I got from Dust-to-Digital recently... Quote

They must be saving the John Fahey sides for that rumored complete Fahey Fonotone sides boxed set. Quote
Claude Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Why does the paper on the back of the box mention under "The Basics": This year marks the 60th birthday of Keith Jarrett - look for several high profile releases from him Keith Jarrett records for ECM. His only Columbia album "Expectations" has already been reissued in a definitve version. What releases are they referring to? Quote
JSngry Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 I don't know, but I'd love to hear a Jarrett version of "Moanin'"... Quote
GregK Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 I don't know, but I'd love to hear a Jarrett version of "Moanin'"... man, thats the only thing people can comment on when it comes to Jarrett, huh? Quote
JSngry Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) Not at all. Keith's somewhat a favorite of mine. But a cheap joke's a cheap joke, so you gotta carpe diem! Edited January 10, 2006 by JSngry Quote
RDK Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 He also does a killer version of "Softly as a Moanin' Sunrise." Quote
GregK Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 He also does a killer version of "Softly as a Moanin' Sunrise." alright, alright, yes they're funny, but enough!! Quote
medjuck Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 I finally broke down and got this. I'm a Miles completist but only through '69. So far I do like this. Has anyone peeled back the sticker and seen what it says underneath? Quote
Rosco Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 UK date on this now February 20th!!!! WTF????!!!!! Quote

jazzbo Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Who does? I have a defective disc on this set. . . disc two. . . has that noisey mist of digital distortion on the third third of the disc. Quote

I've heard that Keith does not appreciate cheap jokes at his expense. Good! Maybe he can read that and have a hissy fit over me like he did over Marcus Miller in his notes here... Seriously, I love the cat, but...well...you know. And even more seriously, does anybody else think that the Friday night sets are the most organic? I mean, you can hear the stuff getting tighter and more telepathic with each set from each night, and on Friday, it just seems like BAM, it's all there. Adding McLaughlin on Saturday certainly didn't make it any worse, but now I'm wondering what the night would have been like if he hadn't been there & if the trend of the week continued. No matter - this is a great set! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 I agree, Friday seems to have it all. John does shake it up some on Saturday and there are some nice explorations and incredible moments! If he'd been there all week. . .w o w. . . . Quote

medjuck Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Thanks. Was he really playing with Stevie Wonder when he was 13? And in 2003 he still looks like he's about 18 years old. Anyone here hear "Rebirth? " Quote
