Jazz Sightings

Oh, if we're talking porn, I once heard "Big Swing Face" in a porn film. In Vegas, no less!

Can't speak for anybody else, but if I had to fuck to Buddy Rich, I think I'd just as soon go without. Either that, or try to figure out how to concoct (and survive) a massive Viagra/cocaine cocktail.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Sitting in Orioles Stadium on Thursday for the Red Sox - O's game, I heard Sweets Edison.

OK, it was Sinatra, "Fly Me To The Moon" but when Sweets played those three notes he knew (as Sinatra once put it when he asked him to play on a record) there wasn't any doubt who it was, and I thought it was awfully cool to be hearing Sweets at a ballgame. Made me wish my wife could have been there, so I'd have had someone to tell. :g

I often hear Monk and Miles on the Weather Channel when the local report comes on. I don't know if this is true only for this area or for the rest of the country as well.

Paul, there was a time there where I was hearing real, legit jazz on the Weather Channel also - but they didn't keep it up, at least not when I've been tuning in.

I'd like to say that in this part of the country, we hear Weather Report on the Monk & Miles channel, but that would be a lie.

Thanks to Paul for linking this thread in the Weather Channel "smooth jazz" thread, as it gives me a chance to post about a jazz sighting that really surprised me a few years ago. February 2006, coming back from a Wedding in Tampa we stopped at a Mickey D's outside of Orlando and I was absolutely blown away when I realized that Dexter Gordon's "Cheesecake" was playing.

Gardening and DIY TV programmes over here are full of jazz backgrounds. My wife watches them and I had to stop and watch when in one programme there were Grant Green's "Selma march", Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" and Nat Adderely's "Work song". All in one programme!

A few years ago, there was a beautiful TV ad for Renault Clio featuring Jimmy Smith's "Organ grinder swing", with a hammer (or was it a Renult?) smashing a huge pane of glass exactly in time with Grady Tate's cymbal, propelling JOS into the stratosphere! I've tried unsuccessfully to find that on Utube, because it's brilliant!
