There's a lot more wonderful music you can look forward to. Blakey only made one bad album. And even that's better than a lot of stuff. I'd be curious to hear others' opinions (I forget if it's been brought up on the board before... probably). To give you an idea: Recorded circa 1963 (I'd welcome an exact date here), released on Colpix. With: Art Blakey,Curtis Fuller,Lee Morgan,Wayne Shorter,James Spaulding,Charlie Davis,Julius Watkins,Bill Barber,Cedar Walton,Reggie Workman. I dig the tunes, the arrangements, the solos, everything. The main title, "Theme from golden boy" is better known to most jazz fans as "Night Song" (also recorded by Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, JJ Johnson, Sarah Vaughan, and more recently by Eric Alexander, to name a few). The other 2 songs I'm curious about because of the novelty sounding song names and the short times. "I Can't Grow Peaches On A Cherry Tree*" sounds like one of those songs that Mrs. Hank Williams Sr. sang with Hank. Good thing you included personnel, otherwise I'd be sure that somehow the Ramones were involved with the recording. *Or apparently Nancy Sinatra. The announcements by Pee Wee Marquette on Birdland along with hearing Mr. Blakey speak add to the fun. With Thelonious Monk is another fine one. There are a few different issues floating around so if someone can chime in on which is the preferred please do. Although Roots And Herbs has not been released as an RVG I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it. There are others but those are 6 that get a lot of play time. "Golden Boy" and "Soul Finger" are fine albums, even though they may appear to be commercial copouts. Some of my favorites (without going to look at the shelves): "The Jazz Messengers" (Columbia) "Moanin'" (Blue Note) "At the Jazz Corner" (Blue Note) "Impulse" (Impulse) "Mosaic" (Blue Note) "Buhaina's Delight" (Blue Note) "Ugetsu" (Riverside) "Free For All" (Blue Note) "Indestructible" (Blue Note) There are plenty more really good ones, but these are the standouts for me. In This Korner Keystone 3 Live at Kimballs all of these are worth it IMO, "In This Korner" is a cookin' underrated session featuring the great Valery Ponomarev on trumpet.
