Looking for an Argo session by Stitt & B Green

Recommended Posts

I have this on CD at home but I don't think it was called "My Main Man"... isn't it called "Soul in the Night"?? Is this the session you're talking about? Good date that I miraculously found in the Burlington, MA Tower Records "clearance" bin for around $12. Well worth every penny.

BTW, it was released in that same series that gave us Baby Face Willette's "Mo Rock" and "Behind the 8 Ball". These are the CDs with a watermelon motif and "Soul Jazz" written on the inside of the CD behind the clear CD tray.

Kevin

not according to AMG (FWIW)

Ahhhh! Now I see the confusion!

"B Green" in this instance translates to "Bennie Green" not "Bunky Green" like I thought. Pretty funny mix up on my part.

In looking at this "My Main Man", it does look like a good one... although the rhythm section is kinda "blah"... Bobby Buster and Dorel Anderson?

I betcha Deep has this. He's as much a Stitt fan as I am and even I don't have half the stuff Deep has.

A few tracks have shown up on compilation cds, the one that couw mentions, and also the title track has been on the Chess Jazz Story collection. . . it's possible he was playing from one of these. Or it's possible it has been released in Japan, though I haven't seen this to be the case.

Aside from the compilation (image posted by Couw), there's not a lot of Sonny's Argo work out on cd. Notable exceptions are Sonny Stitt, Interaction, At the DJ Lounge and Soul in the Night (which is not very good IMHO). I'd love to see My Main Man in cd. Picked up the LP after I heard the few cuts on the compilation. DJ Lounge is a must. It really burns.

You know, Brad, after I bought "Soul in the Night" and got home & played it, it stayed in my "trade" pile for a few weeks. One day as I went out the door, I grabbed it and played it in the car. By the time I got home, it still went into the trade pile. A while later, I spun it again... don't remember why... and it just sounded good. I don't think it's "stellar" stuff, just good bluesy soul Jazz. I also think Bunky Green's tone is a bit weird. Might be what initially turned me off.

I have Satan on LP. Haven't listened to it yet. How is it?

I have both of the records, "Soul in the Night" and "My Main Man". I don't think I've listened to Soul yet...

How to know you have too much music..... :g

I don't think you can have too much music.

The "My Main Man", is that on CD or LP? I was listening to a college raido station when I heard it. I called them and I was told it was a CD import. I can't seem to find it though.

Green and Stitt are together on a Prestige date from 1965 entitled "POW". It's a nice session and Stitt and Green are a good pairing. My copy of this is on Roulette for some reason.

Good luck finding "My Main Man", well worth seeking out.
