JSngry Posted March 1 Report Posted March 1 Not sure what the concept was, but those are some damn good records, at least the ones I've heard. There's a good chunk of Pullen/Adams/Dannie in various records, some crazy Johnny Griffin, Steve Grossman, Sal Nistico, Slide Hampton, it goes on for a while. The Italian players are all good, so it's not like they meekly provide generic backing or something like that. To be honest, I can't see any of them disappointing. Quote

JSngry Posted March 1 Report Posted March 1 George Adams But it's "that band" no matter who is leading, and they're a lot more free and loose than their later records. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 Steve Grossman – Jazz A Confronto 23 Listening to this one now on a bit of a whim. I'm not really a fan of Grossman (or not a big fan, I like him more or less) but this is great stuff, largely because of the Italian backing musicians, and Irio da Paula on guitar, who I don't know at all beyond @mjazzg 's recommendation above. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 Any other recommendations for the Irio Da Paula / Alfonso Vieira spine would be really welcome. I understand that they played together frequently. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 Actually, any recommendations for other showings of the obscure to me but excellent but excellent Italian musicians either leading or on rhythm on these records. Quote

Some mention above of the Enrico Rava but does anyone rate any of the others? I've got the Waldron. Nothing special, he made much better records in those years. Quote

I was put off for a long time, first because I assumed that they were compilations, and then later because I didn't really like the Lee Konitz one. Quote

Funny, I would have said the same. I bought them both in the late 70´s at the old "Radio Kratz" on Maria Hilfer Strasse , and still love them most. Quote
