Where's Christiern?

I love Chirs, but he could get a little pissy sometimes. But I defer to that out of genuine respect and the aforementioned love. We are who we are, and he's more than earned it, I think. So hey.

Frankly, though, I don't see what the fuss is about Mr. Dolan. I was expecting some raving wing-nut, and instead I get a seemingly sensible-enough moderate-rightie, unless I've missed something outrageous. We've certainly seen more irrational ones on either end. Aside from a little "aggressiveness" in his tone sometimes (which I've got no problem with, we are who we are), no problems here.

It was better before you arrived. 96% of your posts are in the political forum and the rest seem to be in ones like this where you get in an arguement with someone. Have you ever posted in a music thread? Do you even like jazz?

Oh, so if someone posts significantly more in the political forum than anywhere else and likes to argue with people they don't agree with, their presence here should be questioned?

But it's obvious Johnny cares about music. Why has Dolan joined this forum? If you just like to argue with people you don't agree with there are plenty of forums. Why join one about jazz?

Have you ever posted in a music thread?

I don't believe I ever have here, no.

Do you even like jazz?

Absolutely!

Hell, I named my son after two Jazz musicians. But, as I explained to you in another thread, I feel I have said all I have to say about Jazz. I prefer to listen to it rather than talk about it these days. The main reason being that nothing new has really got me excited over the last few years (aside from certain albums such as Touchin' On Trane, The Peach Orchard, Painters Spring...), so I find myself drifting back towards the older masters. And what more can really be said about Trane, Dolphy, Miles, Webster, Ellington, etc..?

If you just like to argue with people you don't agree with there are plenty of forums.

That there are, Mr. juck. And since you like percentages so much, why not break down how many people here I argue with as opposed to how many people I simply have a thorough conversation with. That would be an interesting stat.

Also, as it sometimes tends to be at JC, people sometimes prefer to talk about me rather than talk to me. You would be a good example of this seeing that you already have a well formed opinion of me and like to air it, but I'm not sure how you were able to form it since you and I have rarely conversed with each other.

Why not try talking to me rather than about me? That's fair to both of us, isn't it? And if you find you still don't like me, then so be it.

Not being a JC type, I've got no idea whether or not the reputation was justified or not. But although I've read some things you've posted with that I would disagree with in degree, I can't say there's been anything totally wack or such.

But rightly or wrongly, folks here do like the occasional venture out into the sunshie of the "regular" board. It's seen as a gesture of community-mindedness.

Just so you know.

I see.

Well, talking about music these days normally bores me to tears to be perfectly honest. But I'll scan to see if I can find a thread that peaks my interest.

Sort of tongue-in-cheek, but maybe Jim can set up a software rule that people can only make posts in the Politics forum if their % of political posts is 50% or less. That would enable the politics forum to be used more as a complementary forum to the main forums (forii?), between people who are here primarily to discuss music, instead of those that are primarily here to discuss politics.

Is there merit in that? I know there are arguments both pro and con about the Politics forum, but maybe that would take some of the venom out of the arguments and clashes in there.

My suggestion isn't for the purpose of running anyone off, but to encourage contributions to the music-related discussion.

I don't pretend to know Jim well, but I think I know him enough to say that he'd never go for that. Besides, 50% would likely keep such guys as Johnny E and Chris A out of the political forum I think (i haven't checked actual numbers though).

I honestly don't see what the problem is though. No one is forced to post about anything, the Politics Forum is optional, and I for one would get just as tired of reading a couple of Lefties arguing amongst themselves as I would a couple of Righties. It's only fun when the water and the dirt mix it up and make mud.

Come on, now: somewhere around here you can find a group intervention of good-hearted souls trying to help me dig Charlie Parker. Or giving me the Bird, so to speak.

The only thing that would take the venom out of the arguments and clashes in the politics forum is forbidding political discussions.

The politics forum is there for a reason -- to keep the inevitable political discussions (which will happen wherever and whenever people congregate) from spilling out into the rest of the board. If people want to spend the overwhelming majority of their time there, as Johnny E and Scott seem to, that's their business. Personally I find non-political discussion to be more enjoyable and look forward to their occasional contributions outside politics.

I'll admit that initially I was somewhat wary of Scott given his "reputation" but all my interactions with him suggest that he's a nice guy. If he plays rough in the politics forum, that's par for the course.

Oh my stars, comrades, is this turning into a thread about Mr. Dolan??? How very JC!!! :P Now, if his comments prove to be too counterrevolutionary, then I say we simply have him shot!!! Futhermore, I say that ALL posters with percentages over 90% in politics be shot!!! (Er, um, well... perhaps we should table that last proposition.) What I demand to know is this: what does Mr. Dolan think of my favorite band the Beach Boyz??? :excited:

Pssttt, comrade... Charlie Parker's Complete Dial and Savoy Masters. At BMG... make haste, my boy!!!

I had it on my Christmas wishlist (oops, sorry Comrade: Xmas wishlist, please don't tell the Kremlin), but then remembered it was blatant materialistic commercialism, and fed the list to my pet goat. :w

Does this mean you've returned to the Politics forum? If so, I may have to reconsider my voluntary banishment, as I miss the days of yore when we would hunker down in the barracks, listening to NPR on the transistor radio and argue over who was right and who was left.

No, He's a bleeding heart like you, and every other poster on the Poli forum! :P He just plays the devil's advocate.

Well thank you, brother.

Some of my rep is well deserved, I'll be the first to own up to that. When I first started posting at JC in '02, I was indeed a firebreathing rightwing loon. September 11th really shook me up and I fell into Hannity/Limbaugh/Fox News trap.

But I've recovered quite nicely, I believe. And I dove head first into politics as a result. And that is a good thing. It's helped me to better understand that America is an ideologically based society which means we all basically want the same ends. It's just the means that seperate us.

Come on, now: somewhere around here you can find a group intervention of good-hearted souls trying to help me dig Charlie Parker. Or giving me the Bird, so to speak.

Well, I'm a rather lukewarm fan of his Birdness, but do appreciate his contributions. So maybe I'll end up being part of said group.

So you're also familiar with the goings on at JC? What is your handle there?

But I agree with you. I used to dig threads about me, but now they make me cringe. I don't seek the attention, it just seems to happen.

Pssttt, comrade... Charlie Parker's Complete Dial and Savoy Masters.

Big Al, this is sound advice. Though the wealth of false starts, breakdowns, and alternate takes can sometimes be tedious, this is an excellent document of the master. I got this one when I still lived in Florida many years ago, and I still consider it one of the "must have" boxes in my collection.

Where do you stand on folks like Eric Dolphy and Ornette?
