king ubu Posted October 25, 2012 Report Posted October 25, 2012 disc one of the 3CD edition Wonderful set, so underestimated as a chronicle of improvisation at it's best. Oh yes, it's stunning! I remember how I bought it, was still in high school and in these days before internet and credit cards, I paid well around 100$ for it in a local store (that just closed, and their asking such money for CDs was quite certainly a part in it, though that was regular among music stores here, until a few years ago). @brownie: 1954 material, what's that? "Afro"? Material from the 'Manteca', 'Afro' an 'Diz Big Band' on Norgran/Verve. Thanks! Will have to check some discographies to see if I have all of this. Does the box include the Gene Norman concert in its entirety? (The GNP releases, it seems, omit a pair of tracks!) Now playing disc one of this one: Quote

JSngry Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 Still having fun with this one...if you're a fan of the late-60s BN HardBop sides and not heard these should give it a consider. Very good music in that vein here, good compositions, good playing, good feel, very "organic" in a way that it didn't necessarily have to be. Quote
brownie Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Art Tatum 'The Complete Pablo Group Masterpieces', the Ben Webster sides! Quote
Clunky Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Charles Mingus - Complete Debut Recordings (Fantasy)- don't listen enough to this set , firstly it's huge and secondly the sound Q is slightly below moderate. Quote

T.D. Posted November 16, 2012 Report Posted November 16, 2012 Have been spending a lot of time with this. I prefer the more recent discs (esp. 6, 7, 8), but they're all pretty good. The occasional use of synthesizer is not really to my taste, but it's not a deal-breaker. Quote
king ubu Posted November 17, 2012 Report Posted November 17, 2012 disc one right now, but will be playing more of it tonight and tomorrow that Bailey/Nistico/Goykovich set looks great - wasn't aware of its existence at all! Quote
