mikelz777 Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 My wonderful wife recently received a nice bonus at work and gifted me with $200.00 to spend however I please. Needless to say, I'm tempted to spend a large chunk, if not all of it, on new music. What to do, what to do...? I'm tempted to spring for the Gillespie Mosaic box but I think I might be more inclined to sit tight and wait for a nice deal on the Universal sets if or when they eventually make themselves available at a discount. A couple of sets that jump onto my radar are the Sonny Rollins Freelance box or the Joe Henderson Milestone Years box. (Anyone selling one?) I was also inspired by the Woody Shaw thread and am interested in the 4 volumes of his live material on Highnote or a combination of some of his other dates on 32.Jazz. Decisions, decisions... What would you do with $200.00 of guilt-free money burning a hole in your pocket? Quote

Needless to say, I'm tempted to spend a large chunk, if not all of it, on new music. What to do, what to do...? ... What would you do with $200.00 of guilt-free money burning a hole in your pocket? Tastes differ (obviously), so I wouldn't try to impose my specific preferences on others... My collection isn't that extensive, so my approach doesn't run to the big boxes (although I regret not jumping on the Bill Evans box in last summer's Concord blowout). So I'd look mostly to single discs rather than Mosaics or boxes. That said, I've long had an eye on the Farmer/Golson/Jazztet Mosaic, and to a lesser extent the Farlow (which is available as a Universal). I'd first look at single CDs which have been on my wish list, or at Japanese imports of hard-to-find items. The ejazzlines.com inventory has really caught my attention, though a lot of the titles have trickled down to Amazon Marketplace at lower prices. I could easily go over $100 in individual CDs, which might leave room for a Mosaic. Quote

MoGrubb Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 I agree, buy a couple of Wayne Shorters, but, then go hang out at the local Dairy Queen for a couple of days. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 I'd skip the Gillespie Mosaic for now, it's in my opinion better value at a discount if one ever becomes available. See if you can track down used copies of the Rollins and Henderson boxes, and consider something very new to you, like maybe the Lu Watters and the Yurba Buena Jazz band box on Good Time Jazz (Newbury Comics has it at half price) of the Storyville Duke Box. Unk Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Under the circumstances, I'd set it aside to buy something nice for my wife, a few months down the road. But hey, that's just me. Quote

jazzbo Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Well if it were me, I'd be torn. . . . I'd either buy some NOS vacuum tubes for my stereo equipment (there's always some new tubes to try, it's fun!) or I'd work on my Mosaic Wish List on the site, which has lots of Selects in them (I have most of the material in these sets separately so I have hesitated to buy them, but with a windfall. . .) Tom 1960 Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 The wife would probably kill me, but I have a pretty extensive list of single cds on my wish list. Then again $200 would only scratch the surface of that list. Quote
Unk Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 If I had to spend it on myself, no doubt: live music. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 Or about 3% of Steve Lacy's output. Quote

Now, here's a man who knows what's important in life. Well, my wife doesn't have too much to complain about this month. We moved, and in the process, she ended up with a modern kitchen (left by the previous owners) and new bedroom set and couch and rug that I just ordered. The only thing used was the dining room table. I also set up a 529 for my son and daughter (for college). So I'm probably covered for a while. If I had a $200 bonus, it would probably go to a $50 book -- Visions of Japan: Kawase Hasui's Masterpieces -- and the rest towards tickets at the Chicago Symphony or theatre tickets. (But I'll probably end up getting these anyway.) Quote
mikelz777 Posted June 18, 2007 Author Report Posted June 18, 2007 This is my first dip, a handful of $6.99-ers from J&R. Quote

'Course, it's basically a good idea to have a bit of a hedge for that mistake you're most likely to make down the road. Anyhow, beings I'm single, 40% on a coupla Shorter CDs, 60% at Dairy Queen.
