mjazzg Posted May 19 Posted May 19 FIFA, as usual, doing their utmost to devalue the tournament. But I'll be glued to lots of it and be cheering on an overrated (here at least) England team. Expecting France or Spain to win it. Argentina and Portugal as outsiders. Quote

There was an article in the NYT last week or so how Argentine fans are doing whatever they can, including going into debt, to go to the Cup. Crazy at those prices. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Seems like there is less interest this time around. I was surprised that my 8 year old who is football mad had barely identified that it was coming. For my part I am still recovering from last night's walk home from seeing Mike Cooper at Cafe OTO to Angel. Quote

Also perhaps the proliferation of "minnows" with the 48 expansion. Not all of them can have a Curacao effect. The quality of football is never great but you get to see lots of footballers who you might not otherwise be aware of, and who will inevitably end up in the European leagues if they do well. Plus teams like Ghana that play with real heart are always good to watch. But I am struggling to get the energy together this time. 11 minutes ago, mjazzg said: Walking home in the rain last night after a Tyshawn Sorey concert was bliss Just be pleased that no semi-local teams had just won the league. Even sourer and more miserable than last time. Perhaps it is just me getting sourer and more miserable. Quote

The horrible countdown, the advert sorry hydration breaks, the endless tv focus on, mostly US celebs, in the crowd. And Wayne Rooney as a pundit! Yes, I'm getting miserable too now Edited June 23 by mjazzg Quote
Brad Posted June 23 Posted June 23 I don’t agree. I find the matches enjoyable and the crowds seem to be enjoying themselves. I would have liked to have gone as I only live one hour from the Meadowlands but $1,000 plus for a ticket is just ridiculous. Apparently, people are buying them though. Quote
gvopedz Posted June 23 Posted June 23 I am having a great time watching the World Cup games - maybe because I am watching them on the Spanish network Telemundo. Quote

The US telecast of the Spain Saudi match annoyed me a little bit because in the last twenty or so minutes they were talking about the US team. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) Great couple of matches, Norway and England both getting through in very different ways. England's performance was very impressive (but I am biased). Edited July 6 by mjazzg Quote

Did you stay up to watch England Mexico? Impressed if so. Sad that there's such a funk over this tournament because the knockout round matches have been good so far. Quote
Dub Modal Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Brazilians seem to be coming down hard on their team but the combo of Nyland and Haaland bookending this Norway team was inspiring and proved to be too much. Brazil had some great shots that could have changed the game but Nyland was out of his mind. Brazil and their fans should keep their heads up. No shame in how they played that game. Quote

Jason Bivins Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Another questionable red card in the England game. Glad they won, though. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 6 Posted July 6 I actually thought that card was fair, the tackle was high and late and it set up the rearguard action narrative too. And are we hearing a lot of that over here today! Rightly so, mind I was less sure about the decision that gave Mexico their penalty 3 hours ago, Dub Modal said: Brazilians seem to be coming down hard on their team but the combo of Nyland and Haaland bookending this Norway team was inspiring and proved to be too much. I agree about Nyland, he was tremendous. Haaland is great, doesn't touch the ball for great periods and then, bam! I'm looking forward to seeing how we contain him. We do have two of his club's centre halves in Stones and Guehi so hopefully they have some extra insights. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted July 6 Posted July 6 This classic song of anciente dayes popped into my head last night for the first time in almost thirty years, and now I can't get rid of it: Hopefully making other people watch it will cure me of the curse, like in the Ring. Quote

Niko Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) That was the good game, now comes the one that could change soccer forever, depending on what comes out and how it's being handled Edited July 6 by Niko Quote

It just goes to show that you have to be careful even if you're just jumping over a little wall. Quote

Well done Belgium. I feel sorry for Bealogun who became a pawn in a game he had no control over. I have to say I thoroughly applaud the Belgian FA's official online riposte "overturn this" 1 hour ago, Rabshakeh said: He’s getting mocked for this too. Cruel maybe but it was but bloody foolish.
