With Django I am not necessarily a completist. I really like his music but 40cds are way too much to digest for me. Thanks Steve anyway for your thoughts :)

I have those 40CDs and must say I am happy with them, the documentation is excellent and I know I will never have to buy anything by Django again... Can't say I've played all of them yet though... Before that I used to have the Django CDs from the Jazz in Paris series... They give a really nice overview of his career as a whole... There was also a box set collecting those Jazz in Paris CDs but that one seems to be rare...

Here is an old thread about Django boxsets

For the completists The Savory collection has a few recordings with Ellington unknown at the time. And unavailable if they had known. They are from Carnegie Hall. My notes are sketchy. Among the tunes are Happy Go Lucky Local, Improvisation 1, Honeysuckle rose (14:33) and iirc Happy Go Lucky Local, Improvisation 2, Honeysuckle rose (14:35). There were concerts 23th and 24th November 1946.

Hi all. I have been a Django fan since 1971 when I bought my first album here in New Zealand. It is that album that I am now trying to identify. I lent it to a friend many years ago and it was never returned, much to my dismay. However I had made a cassette tape of it which I have played sparingly over the years, then cleaned it up electronically and made a CD which has all the authenticity of a 78rpm record! The opening track is just on 3.00 min long, is upbeat, and starts with Stephane Grappelli playing four notes over Django's guitar, a motif which is repeated several times during the song. I've looked through the online discographies and listened to many tracks but still can't locate the song. The album does not appear in any listing I've seen either. It may have been a record company compilation? Can anyone help me here? Thank you, Mitchell
