I know that I'm revealing myself to be the world's biggest geek when I say this, but this episode was from the second season of TNG. It really wasn't until the fourth season that the show really hit its stride (you can tell this is from the second season because Poulaski is the doctor instead of Crusher). The first season is the overall worst (worst special effects, worst costumes, worst storylines (many of which involved Wesley saving the ship) and a beardless Riker). The second season wasn't much better (although Riker had grown the beard by this point). Notice that the crew is still wearing those annoying "low-collar" uniforms. The better "high-collar" uniforms didn't arrive until the third season, which is when things started to pick up (the show didn't REALLY get good until they sent Wesley off to Starfleet Academy).

Yeah, when you go on that long about it, I have to agree...

I'd argue with you about the merits of the various seasons, but then I'd look just as bad.

Well of course...

Actually, I heard that at least part of the second season overlapped the 1988 writer's strike, which gives them an excuse for not improving the storylines much from the first season. Overall, the third season was an amazing improvement over the second, and I agree that the fourth was their best. It was steadily downhill from there, though.

Growing up I always thought the funniest moment in the original series was when the cascade of tribbles fell on Kirk. But then, that was supposed to be funny. If we're talking about unintentional moments, there are too many to choose.

Not an actual Star Trek moment, but I love the sequence from The Larry Sanders Show where Larry and the writers are talking to Shatner via a speaker-phone, trying to get him to say "Klingons." At one point Sanders says, "Who was your biggest enemy on Star Trek?" Shatner pauses and says, "Well, DeForest Kelley and I had some problems..." :D

My favourites from the original series:

In "Turnabout Intruder," Dr. Janice Lester takes over Kirk's body. Once aboard the Enterprise, we see Kirk/Lester filing his nails!

"The Enemy Within," when Kirk gets split in the transporter. Every second scene is a riot from Evil Kirk's sudden turn to the camera in his first interaction with the transporter tech to the hand that thrusts out to "Stop pretending" to "Saurian brandy!"

I agree the first two seasons of The Next Generation were poor. Things picked up once Riker got his beard and Dr. Crusher returned with a better dye job.

Season 1 generally sucked with only a few exceptions.

Season 2 is genuinely better -- there are several good episodes and two great ones. I think the writers were starting to figure out what to do with the show.

Season 3 was the big leap forward and season 4 the best. However, while I agree that later seasons were not as good as 4, season 6 was probably the 2nd best of the series and season 5, while somewhat erratic, had three of the episodes the series ever ran. Season 7 was probably the weakest aside from the 1st 2 but that's probably because they were working on other stuff.

DS9 was a substantially better series.

Another funny moment -- or rather series of moments -- is from the 1st season episode "Justice", where the Enterprise visits a planet that's part resort, part fitness club and part orgy den. (The scantily clad natives jog from place to place.) As one would obviously guess, this easygoing paradise imposes the death penalty for breaking a handful of infractions -- one of which is triggered when young Wesley Crusher ignores the ankle-high warning fence and trips into a flower bed. "WE'RE FROM STARFLEET -- WE DON'T LIE!"

I was literally laughing for five minute straight during this one.

BTW I presume you read the Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy.

How did you pick up on that little detail and miss the homoerotic encounter between Kirk and Spock (from the same episode)?!?!?

Wasn't there a homoerotic encounter between Kirk and Spock in EVERY episode? Isn't that why Spock and McCoy didn't get along? They were both after Kirk, right?

Agreed, DS9 was pretty freaking great, especially after Worf joined the crew.

I lost interest after Jadzia died, though.

Ditto here, on all points.

DS9 still holds up in reruns (except that last season), which I still catch every once in a while (on Spike TV).

The multi-episode story arcs were great (sometimes 5 to 8 epsiodes at a time). And the HUGE cast of extended characters on DS9 really made it one of the most interesting Sci-Fi productions in television history. Some might call it a Soap Opera in space, but there's a lot to be said for NOT having to wrap up every story line in 52 minutes each week.

I think the 7th season was fantastic, especially near the end.

I agree that seasons 5 and 6 both had quite a few good episodes. What are the three episodes from season 5 that you consider among the best the series ever ran? Just curious (we all have our favorites.)

From the first season of the original Star Trek, the episode with the rock boring entity called the Horta. The scene where Mr. Spock mind melds with the creature is a classic. It may be the first time in the series that Spock used that technique. I also think it's the first time Dr. McCoy protests one of Captain Kirk's directives by saying "I'm a doctor, Jim, not a (fill in the blank). In this case, bricklayer.

I'm also partial to the card playing scene in the episode where Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to the planet that's run by gangsters. It's the one where Kirk is trying to teach some of the hoods how to play a game he calls Fisbin. Actually, that whole episode is pretty amusing.

Up over and out.
