Jon King Posted January 30, 2023 Report Posted January 30, 2023 Billy Butterfield & The Essex Five - “Deed I Do” yes, I have been discovering a new/old trumpet player. This track keeps me grooving with its economically tight front line and a great drummer. The drum work is more bebop while the trumpet/sax harmony almost goes cool. Think Kenny Clarke + cool Miles - ahhh. College Jazz Sampler, 1955 Quote

adh1907 Posted February 26, 2023 Report Posted February 26, 2023 I think this is one of the best examples of Lee Morgan’s style ( and possibly Jackie Mclean), a classic. Quote

Lovely album, too bad they sat on it for two and a half years and gave it such an awful cover. And the bonus tracks session should be issued in it's entirely. Quote

Larry Kart Posted February 27, 2023 Report Posted February 27, 2023 "I Can't Get Started" from the Lee Konitz/Paul Bley album "Out of Nowhere" (Steeplechase) 1997. In fact just about every track on this one is a jaw dropper, with Bley at his most brilliantly eccentric and Lee hitting every Bley curve ball, changeup, knuckleball, even a few beanballs right on the nose in an inspired manner. What a day in the studio this must have been. Quote
JSngry Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 Is it just me, or is Sinatra adopting an Eckstine-ish approach to his harmony/intervals on this one? He certainly did some amazing things on ballads over the years, but this one seems more overtly "boppish" than usual? Or maybe it's Riddle putting it there Quote
Pim Posted March 3, 2023 Report Posted March 3, 2023 My favorite Shorter tune I guess: This while band rocks. I just love that start of Hanock's solo. Quote
