AllenLowe
jeez, when did this happen? I only met Dixon once or twice; I know Cliff was close to him. So sorry to hear about it, a complete shock.

ATR
His contribution to the film Imagine the Sound was eye and ear opening. A remarkable person and musician.
Afric Pepperbird
I've listened to all the Dixon I have the last few days. Now I'm listening to Marc Levin's The Dragon Suite, produced by Dixon. Levin was a student of his.
ep1str0phy
Just like to mention that I picked up Weight/Counterweight yesterday. It has to be the best new(er) release I've heard in a long, long time. Sparse, completely unforced, simultaneously dynamic and subdued... in some weird way, it captures the special "vibe" of Get Up With It-era Miles with 100% more flexibility. Ambient free jazz might be the best way to put it--a completely different idiom--even more so than the Soul Note group recordings (which I love). It's a testament to the man's continued development...
clifford_thornton
Indeed, Weight/Counterweight is fantastic.

B. Clugston
Nice piece on the Bill Dixon memorial by our own Clifford: http://cliffordallen.blogspot.com/2010/08/tapestry-for-from-bill-dixon.html And a nice piece by Stephen Haynes: http://stephenhaynes.blogspot.com/2010/08/in-search-of-sound-remembering-bill.html
B. Clugston
If you have even the slightest interest in Bill Dixon, don't pass on Weight/Counterweight. I got it recently and it's a masterpiece. I really enjoyed how Aaron Siegel and Ben Hall match Dixon's sparse playing.

mjazzg
I got mine from Volcanic Tongue in Glasgow, Scotland. They may have a copy left but it was a Xmas present to self last year so some time ago. Happy hunting. It's well worth the effort if you find it
Leeway
Fortunately got mine when it was first issued, an exception to my usual mode of procrastinating and vacillating until too late. I've been operating on the principle lately that if a major artist (and, make no mistake, Bill Dixon is securely in that category) puts out a new musical statement, grab it, especially on vinyl, even if the naysayers are taking shots. In time, it will reward.

clifford_thornton
I think it was mostly stuff he didn't want that he sold to a VT shop owner some time ago, duplicates and so forth. Let's just say he wasn't a huge fan of all the people represented in this auction.

Justin V
Black Saint is releasing a 9-CD box of Dixon's Black Saint and Soul Note recordings on the 15th. JazzLoft is selling it for $54.95, which is a steal. EDIT: I noticed that Black Saint is releasing similar box sets of Lester Bowie, Cecil Taylor, Paul Motian and George Russell. jazzbo
I have all those box sets already, the Dixon has been out a few weeks and the others for quite some time in Europe. (I ordered all mine from amazon.fr, they shipped from amazon.de). They're all great. I'm really enjoying the Dixon, about 2/3 of the way through (I'd only heard two discs before.)
