J.A.W. Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Just heard on Dutch radio that Paul Newman has died. NY Times obit Quote
ejp626 Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 It's on the Guardian as well. Definitely a classy guy and an interesting actor in all his roles. RIP Quote
Van Basten II Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 RIP, a solid actor in an era when popular American cinema did not mean dumb cinema. He was involved in a lot of classics. It probably shows more about where i'm from but i can't help but to think of Slap Shot when the name Paul Newman comes up. Quote
porcy62 Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 So many great characters in his career, from Billy The Kid to Butch Cassidy, from Fast Eddie Felsen to Cold Hand Luke, too many to name here. He really was the MAN. RIP Quote
Chalupa Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 In 1982, Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded Newman's Own, a food company that produced food ranging from pasta sauces to salad dressing to chocolate chip cookies. "The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films," Newman once wryly noted. To date, the company -- which donates all profits to charities such as Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camp -- has given away more than $200 million. Newman established the camp to benefit gravely ill children. Now that's amazing. R.I.P. Paul. You did good. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 An interesting observation: Over the years, I have always asked women which (famous) men they find most attractive. Of course, different people have different tastes, and one woman's ideal would inevitably be lost on another. However, I have found that, nearly across the board, regardless of ideal "types," nearly all women LOVE Paul Newman. The only other famous person that even comes close to him in this category is Johnny Depp. Paul Newman made a hell of a lot of great films, and just last weekend I listened to Kenyon Hopkins' s soundtrack from "The Hustler." A great actor and a great guy. Quote
fasstrack Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 A great actor and a great guy. Amen. 'Sometimes nothing can be a great hand'. Quote

The Newman's Own marinara sauce is really tasty, as are the salad dressings. RIP Mr. Newman. A great actor and humanitarian. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Just watched Cool Hand Luke a couple of days ago. That scene of him cutting off the heads of the parking meters is classic. Another legend gone... and man talk about doint something with your life...all those millions of dollars he raised through his food procucts for charity. Amazing. He'll be missed. Quote
Shawn Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 A true class act all the way around. He will be missed. Quote
JSngry Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 A movie star as well as a serious actor, a man who got married (and stayed married) and remained a sex symbol, a rich race car driver with a philanthropic bent, an actor who could do goofy and serious with equal aplomb, a celebrity with substance. In short, a life well lived. Quote
skeith Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 A great actor and Clevelander The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Slap Shot - so many films that I am sure I am forgetting and great performances by him. And not to forget his humanitarian efforts I'll miss him. Quote
king ubu Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Big fan of his - sad news, but then he got old and acted for many decades and did a whole lot of great films! Thanks for that! Quote
Free For All Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 (edited) I've always enjoyed Paul Newman's films. He always seemed like someone who would have been fun to hang out with. I remember many of his movies going back to when I was a kid- some of them weren't great movies, but I always found Newman to be an engaging actor. A few that have distinct memories for me- Drowning Pool - I also remember a young & hot Melanie Griffith in this one. Nobody's Fool - I really enjoy this later Newman performance (and another Melanie Griffith appearance) Paris Blues - of course, mostly for the music Empire Falls - this was a mini-series, I think on HBO. Newman's character was very interesting Also many of the films already mentioned. And yes, I'll even admit to liking Towering Inferno, one of the classic Irwin Allen disaster flicks from the 70s. I'm also a fan of his food products, mostly the pasta sauce (Sockarooni!), salsa and salad dressing. I've enjoyed a lifetime of Newman 's work. And he seemed to be a class act all the way. Rest in Peace. Edited October 13, 2008 by Free For All Quote
sjarrell Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 "Was that floating like a Cadillac or stinging like a Beamer? I'm confused." My kid's gonna be crushed that Doc Hudson is gone, but will continue to enjoy the ranch dressing. Doc sauce, he calls it. I'm a black bean salsa, Butch and Sundance guy myself. Quote

RDK Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Yes indeed, a fine actor and by all accounts a swell guy who will be deeply missed. Selfishly, I regret that we (and by "we" I mean Universal) weren't able to coax him out of retirement for a very fine Bonnie & Clyde film we were doing. He would have been perfect in it. Quote

Just curious, what part would he have played? I'm assuming he was too old to be cast as Clyde Barrow. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 (edited) Sad news - and one of the giants of the old film world. A class act, for sure. And a dignified guy too. Actually saw him on one occasion in an open top pink cadillac with Joanne Woodward. I'd sneaked in to Bel Air with my rental car doing the tourist thing (not sure how I managed it) and they were coming down the hill past me. On the way to Santa Monica/Malibu by the looks of it for a nice Sunday afternoon drive - they both looked extremely happy. RIP Mr Newman. Edited September 27, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
7/4 Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 We were just talking about him this morning... Quote
papsrus Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 I was just mentioned him the other day -- in the supermarket. The exact phrase was, "Paul Newman is everywhere!" ... Wine, if I remember correctly. A Renaissance man. RIP Quote
Johnny E Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean :tup Agreed. Fast Eddie from The Hustler has always stood out to me. Seems like he was a good man as well, never afraid to stand up for what he believed in and put his money where his mouth was. RIP Paul. Quote
