The sound quality is fantastic, too. I wonder why this has never had an official release? Quote
JSngry Posted November 30, 2022 Report Posted November 30, 2022 I paid the minimal cost for the Wolgang's DL way back when. Who would have the rights to release it? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 30, 2022 Report Posted November 30, 2022 Yeah, that is super -- got it from the WV website years ago. No idea who would have the rights. Would be great to see a little CD set of other New Thing at Newport recordings -- Cecil, Bill Dixon, Paul Bley, Joe Daley... Quote

Forgive me my ignorance on Bill Barron but I’ve always thought he was more an inside than ‘outside’ player. Very curious to hear him play with Taylor so added it to my Spotify list. Also time to dive into Bill Barrons discography. Edited November 30, 2022 by Pim Quote
JSngry Posted November 30, 2022 Report Posted November 30, 2022 I hope you mean Barron and not Barton! If so, enjoy! Quote

Barron has been quoted saying that they practiced the music for over a year just to record that one LP side. Quote

Maybe someone could find a pristine soundboard recording of Trane in '66 while they're at it. Quote
colinmce Posted March 5, 2024 Report Posted March 5, 2024 Curious new release from what looks like another new outpost of WXU's enterprise. I wonder if he plans to press these on CD or if this would be a digital-only thing. Some very intriguing potential here. https://first-archive-visit.bandcamp.com/album/cecil-taylor-unit-live-at-fat-tuesdays-february-9-1980-first-visit Quote

Pass. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 5, 2024 Report Posted March 5, 2024 Would rather have it on CD and to that end, a CD box with all of the performances from that run. Quote
djcavanagh Posted March 5, 2024 Report Posted March 5, 2024 So would I, but I will take what we can get! Quote
colinmce Posted March 5, 2024 Report Posted March 5, 2024 (edited) I reached out to Werner and he confirmed that a CD is forthcoming next month, and there will be additional releases in the future. Edited March 5, 2024 by colinmce Quote

Details are here: https://www.wolfgangs.com/music/cecil-taylor-quintet/audio/20020001-51297.html?tid=4844092 Not linking it, but for interested parties there is a European CD of this performance around now, inexplicably crediting Donald Byrd, Steve Lacy, Denis Charles, and Wendell Marshall as the group. Tells you rather all you need to know about the credibility of the pressing but carpe diem if you see fit. (inexplicable in that it's clearly not true, but this is a mish-mash of credits from the 1957 Newport recordings) Quote
JSngry Posted May 14, 2024 Report Posted May 14, 2024 An All Star Lineup of The Swinging Gentlemen Of Jazz! I got it from Wolfgang a way back. An excellent set indeed. Quote
romualdo Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 just found this footage (German doco) of CT in Germany 1986 - has it been shown here before? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 16 hours ago Report Posted 16 hours ago A little bird tells me that Resonance are doing a Cecil/INA set, which I understand to be the 1969 Fondation Maeght recordings. I have the Shandar LPs and am wondering if there is additional, unreleased music from that concert (or if there was another concert than the 29 July '69 "Second Act of A" performance)... there is, of course, circulating material from other gigs by the same quartet. Great news! Since Resonance reissued Albert Ayler's Foundation Maeght recording a few years ago, they should have access to Cecil Taylor's tapes too. Andrew Cyrille is in top form here, so I hope they release it while he's still alive. The Great Concert of Cecil Taylor aka Second Act of A is my favorite Cecil Taylor. Recordings from his quartet around that time, as far as I know, are: 1969/2/8 Grinnell College, IA 1969/7/29 Foundation Maeght, France aka “Second Act of A” 1969/11/4 Copenhagen, Denmark (w/ color video!) 1969/11/5 Stockholm, Sweden 1969/11/6 Berlin, Germany 1969/11/9 Rotterdam, Netherlands aka “Cecil Taylor Quartet In Europe” 1969/11/10 Stuttgart, Germany aka “Fragments of a Dedication to Duke Ellington” Are there any others? clifford_thornton Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago The Whitney Museum of American Art, February 1969 (before 2/15 but after 2/8, not sure the exact date). Amsterdam, 11/7/69 -- Concertgebouw, it looks like, though my mind was telling me Paradiso... 1 minute ago, JSngry said: What is INA? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_national_de_l'audiovisuel Quote
